Hi guys,

I'm looking to cancel my DSTV, after their new increases from the start of April I will be paying R 760p/m for repeats...

From what I've read here Netflix and Hulu seems to be the popular choices, keeping in mind you have the right internet connection. I currently have 3G through Afrihost at home, up untill now Afrihost hasn't given me any hassles, but I doubt this will be good enough to watch TV.

My Questions:

Which is more reliable and faster, uncapped ADSL from Afrihost or Openweb?

Afrihost is charging R297.00 p/m for a 2mbs line, and R387.00 p/m for a 4mbs line.

Openweb is charging R349.00 p/m for a 2mbs line, and R489.00 p/m for a 4mbs line, this is the Gold option currently on special.

Will 2mbs ok?

I don't mind paying extra for a better connection, but I would like to get in cheaper than what I'll pay for DSTV. Are there better/cheaper alternatives I've missed?

Can Netflix and Hulu be played from my Apple TV, or do I need to use my PS3?

All help and advice will be appreciated. Thanks

2MB is fine for 1 Netflix stream. If you want to watch 2 streams at the same time you need 4mb.

Id say try Afrihost. Something is funny with those gold power accounts.

Why not ask them both for a 1G trial account??

I know Openweb do give test accounts - not so sure about Afrihost though. . .

I think for an all round decent connection go with afrihost business 2meg bundle.

If you plan on watching after 5pm and on weekends, you could try the cheaper Incredible connection packages.

netflix and hulu will work fine on apple tv on a 4meg line but you need something like unotelly or a vpn to watch them.

Indeed very cheap if compared to other options available. How reliable are they?

I was on the gold uncapped unshaped account from Openweb for over 4 years and recently moved to Afrihost and will definately recommend Afrihost. Openweb does have allot of issues with the IS backbone at the moment and anything not going through port 80 gets shaped to 150kbps. In the evenings its fine from about 7 or so.
