I thought I would start a report back thread for OpenWeb Uncapped Express accounts.

I am using the 1024k Uncapped account costing me R1399 per month. I get up to 4mb speeds after hours!

What has your experiences been with these accounts?

Cable,

Apparently you can get the same with a 384K uncapped express account.

The 4MB after hours (8pm to 8am) is for all UNCAPPED EXPRESS accounts with all ISP's.

If you have a 4MB ADSL line and a 384K account, it will run at 384K during the day and at night and on weekends it will run at the full line speed.

I'm switching to Axxess soon, as they have their 384K Uncapped Express account going for R899.

You could save R500.......well that is if you only use the internet after hours.

I'm at work all day and usually leave my computer off during day. Only get back home at around 7:30pm......so this works perfectly for me.

Started using the service today and I'm not overly impressed at the moment.
Logged in this afternoon and opened speedtest.net, tested my speed the JHB
and it was normal (430kb/s). Next test, server in Stockholm, Sweden - about 260kb/s.

Next I fired up my Usenet client and sadly I never got more than 120kb/s from Giganews using the maximum amount of concurrent connections (20). Open up a
connection to my international FTP - 240kb/s...

Tonight I went through the same process again to get similiar results and I've still not been able to get more than 2Mbps internationally. I contacted support and they advised me to use multiple connections as each connection has a speed limit of 20-40k/s. While this is a possible solution for HTTP, it's obviously not much of a solution for single connection FTP or SCP transfers. What also bugs me is that I'm not able to get more than 1Mbps from my Giganews account even when using multiple connections.

I've been using OpenWeb for a while and I'm quite disappointed that the speed limit per connection was not advertised or made clearer when signing up.

Note that express (SAT) is slower than express + (Fibre)

I've had it for more than a month now. The first month, the speeds were great. Was getting full speed downloads from Giganews. Those slowed down towards the end of the month... but were still nice.

The daily throttled speed is fine for browsing.

But the last three nights the night time connection has dropped to around 40 or 50 kbps. Not very nice. Have sent several e-mails. Still waiting for some kind of constructive response.
