Hi guys, I know its a bit awkward to compare uncapped and capped packages but why do I get 123K on my Afrihost account but can never reach over 100K on my OpenWeb uncapped account... Do they calculate 1000bytes per K as opposed to 1024 or is it something else? Its a minor thing but works out to 100MB/hr difference...

I don't have lots of knowledge about this, but my general knowledge is that uncapped accounts are usually a bit slower than capped accounts. Apparently capped users get better service due to purchasing limited bandwidth for speed compared to uncapped data at reduced speed. Thus, it's a choice between speed and data.

Allow Me :

Fact is that capped will always run at the full speed of your line as they more gigs you use the more money the provider will make. When one considers how an IPC billing is calcuated the ISP is generally quoted with 2 options :

Option 1 : The ISP will pay per account on the network.
Option 2 : The ISP buys say (50mb uncontended) and manages their own contention every month.

Now let's say the ISP resells or pays per account then their profit is a set amount regardless.

However if the ISP buys bandwidth they can calculate the cost per GB, taking contention ratios and average usage per client into consideration, they can really rake in the profits this way.

To get back to the point the second ISP would prefer you to use more gigs as they have managed their network in order to make a greater profit from per GB billing.

Now with the uncapped package the more you use the more is costs obiouvsly in both bandwidth speeds and GB space - Do not make the mistake of thinking that just because the ISP might be reselling an uncapped package that the GB's don't matter. They do and that is why they shape you :wtf:

Last Fact : The more bandwidth the ISP buys the more it can negotiate with Telkom or whoever for lower prices so it is all a balance of contention and profits.

I bet that if you try any ISP that resells IS per GB accounts you will find the speeds the same.
