We've got a small office setup going with 5 full time employees and a number of volunteers popping in from time to time. I've set up two wireless routers, one 802.11b/g and another only doing 802.11n. The software on the 802.11b/g router is playing up - bombs out when I try to adjust MAC filtering etc so I'd like to install either of DD-wrt or OpenWRT on the router. My question is, what's the difference between the two?

OpenWRT is actually open, while DD-WRT is based on an older fork of OpenWRT, with proprietary UI bolted on.

Personally, I prefer OpenWRT. There's a bit more thought required, but it is incredibly flexible.

If the default UI (luci) is an issue, you could try Gargoyle as an alternative.

Which routers do you have? Lets hope they are supported by http://ofmodemsandmen.com/, which is OpenWRT with some added things like support for 3G/4G modems.

When researching the same question you're asking, I got the impression the DD-Wrt is dying a slow death while OpenWRT is really moving forward with an active community supporting it.

Hi There,
Lots of positive comments around for Open WRT.

Hopefully it solves the issue though maybe a newer router may be the long term better answer.
