If you have a future plan of getting to operating System programming what are some of skills and knowledge you need?

A low level understanding of a computer. E.g., virtual memory, processes vs threads, caches, interrupts, how CPU <-> device communication works, OS calls, etc.

I recommend reading Linux Kernel Programming.
