Hoping to get my mom a new Android capable tablet pc so she can use Whatsapp when it expires on Symbian in December. She only really uses the phone for photo viewing, calls and messaging.

Anyway, was wondering if the local brands like Vodacom, Telefunken and Sansui are any good. I know it won't be a performance beast for R900-R1000ish price range, but it doesn't have to be for the purpose its going to be used. Just don't want to buy something thats going to go faulty in a few months & I have to replace.

Any local brands I should avoid or focus on? Thinking of going for the Sansui 7" or the Telefunken 7". Don't have much experience on which local brands are good or not tho when it comes to tablet pcs.

Any and all help appreciated.

Hello
I'm got my wife a telefunken 7" tablet and is was horrible, my Dad had a sansui" tablet and it was the same! This was about a year ago, now my Dad has a samsung tab 3 the smaller version, don't ask me the model idk, got my wife the samsung tab 3 lite for 2500 brand new from a friend who won it somewhere and didin't want it.
My point is my experience with cheep tablets has not been so good, I will not buy a electronic device that is unknown for a lack of a better word. You'll pay more but you/mom will be happy with it for longer, my 2 cents.

Lenovo or even Proline. Good value and will last many years if not used for excessive gaming etc.

Get a secondhand ipad Air off Gumtree for around R3500. Good quality, you wont know its 2nd hand unless physical damage by owner, and will be able to resell in a year or two for good money.

Never buy a cheap tablet, the only time it worked out for me is when I bought a Chinese one cheaply.

Spending R 900 on a new tablet will not buy you much - you will be able to buy the unbranded one from Matrix warehouse for that price, but it is really poorly spec'd. For that money it would probably be better to look for a really good used Tab from a better known manufacturer.
