Does anyone know of a local OptiBay supplier?

Will do. I think it's the only way I'm going to be able to resurrect my old MBP without replacing the logic board.Let us know how it works out.

If your old MBP is the one I'm thinking of (i.e. older than mine) you're out of luck. They didn't have SATA for the optical bay.
Mine is a A1278 with a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo. Got it back in 2010 iirc. I've checked on iFixIt and it's definitely a SATA superdrive.Aah, so you have a newer one then.

I probably have one of those lying around somewhere too!Aah sorry, I thought you still had the Core Duo pre-unibody. Maybe I'm confusing you with someone elseAs far as I know my early 2008 MBP is the last one with IDE optical drive.
The broken one is in otherwise perfect condition and a great machine.
Just like the Early 2011 models, while we continue to see reliability with 6Gb/s in the optical bay of the 13″ model - the optical bays of the 15″ and 17″ models remain too unstable for 6Gb/s drive use.
