Hi,

We just had a telkom line installed with 4Mbps ADSL.

I've done about 50 speed tests at different times and on different servers. Best results i've seen is 3.18Mbps DL, constant .43 Mbps ULand ping is always about 23ms.
Max on uTorrent is +-390kB

Checked router sync speeds ad its 4096 and 509, why 509? Should this not be 512?

From what i've read in the forums, if it's all 100%, i should get 3.6Mbps and about 425kB in Utorrent.

I've read a bit about SNR and attenuation, routers, distance etc. Can anyone assist me with a step by step guide to find that last 5% of performance?

Last 5% is overhead that you can't change. If you want max 4mb speed get a 6mb line.

What's your line stats like? Think max on a 4Mb line is 3.5Mb down, your upload speed seems about right. You can change your ADSL mode to something else and it will then probably sync at 512 but don't think you will notice a upload speed difference from 509 to 512
If your adsl mode is on G.DMT change it to ADSL2+, if it's on ADSL2+ change it to G.DMT and see if the upload speed sync changes, but post a screenshot of your line stats, maybe that's where the problem is

How do i see my line stats? Is this where i will change from ADSL2+ to G.DMT?
In the modem status?

I understand i wont get full 4mb, but i want 3.5mb and am only getting 3.14mb.

Who is the best to test a 1GB account with? Webafrica? Afrihost? Mweb?

Thanks

1: Which router do you have?
2: All of them! Just try each one, its free :P

Your upload speed is syncing on 509 because its on ADSL2+ mode. That is usually on the exchange side which means your exchange is adsl2+ and you could possibly get 10Mbps or 20Mbps. If it shows 512k as the upload its on a old exchange or old hardware which is only adsl capable with a SA max speed of 4Mbps.

So the 509 is a good thing I would not want to tamper with that. Speeds can also be affected by your ISP and the ADSL line. You say that utorrent not maxing. That could be due to exchange congestion, isp shaping or so many other things. Speedtest.net is also not the most consistent tool to use. You will get that variation in tests.

Thanks for this response.

I tried an Afrihost account, it synced at 512k and i got the same speed. Thanks for the free gig!

Moved it back to my Telkom account and it's syncing at 509k again. Speed still around 3.2mb on speedtest.

Checked the uTorrent at close to midnight, so dont think it is shaping.

With regards to exchange speed, Telkom let me know the max is 4mb, but we live in a brand new area, so its all new infrastructure.

Are there no settings in the modem that i can check to see if i can improve the speed and get it closer to the MAX of 3.5mb odd? Or am i being pedantic?

I must say, it is consistent at that speed, never slow! Im very impressed!

You are getting the max speed for 4096Kb/s. There is no way uTorrent will consistently break 400KB/s on a download. You will see 425KB/s traversing your router but the Torrent overhead takes around 25-40KB/s. 420-430KB/s is the best you will get consistently over 4Mb for other downloads.

The difference between 512 and 509Kb is so little that you will not see any speed difference for uploads; probably 0.06KB/s.

perfect world u will only upload 1mb more in 46 min so realistically make that 1hour for 1mb
