I'm in the market for a new electric toothbrush, and looking at the Oral B range I'm wondering if there is any real difference between the bottom of the range R400 job that I will be replacing, and the expensive ones that run into several thousand rand?

I know they will have different features and extras such as a timer etc, but is there any real difference in actually cleaning your teeth? And if so, is there a sweet spot between price and cleaning?

Looking for recommendations. At the moment I'm looking at the Pro 2 2500 which is R899 at Dischem (I like the travel case also). I have R1500 Dischem vouchers and am wondering if it's worth going higher in the range even if it means putting some cash additional to the vouchers?

Edit: I see the same brush mentioned above on One Day Only for R649.

This is the one you want and it's also on sale.

Plus it will be an awesome daily reminder that you needed help buying a toothbrush. :)

Jesting aside - it has a built in timer and accepts adult sized brushes.

If only they had my little pony :p

But yeah, good to know.

Thanks. I’ll check them out. Any in particular for about R1000?

TL;DR is that you want any one with the 62 000 movements per second.

From the link:
We can report with confidence that these toothbrush lines do feature Sonicare's 62,000 brush movements-per-minute brushing action ...
DiamondClean Smart, DiamondClean, ExpertClean, FlexCare Platinum Connected, FlexCare Platinum, FlexCare+, HealthyWhite+, HealthyWhite, ProtectiveClean, Sonicare for Kids
So these models are still candidates in our "best Sonicares" evaluation.

And can state with confidence that these lines don't ... and therefore are no longer in contention in our evaluation.
PowerUp, DailyClean

I have one of those top end sonic care tooth brushes. I love using it, but I’m not sure if I will pay R3k or more for it, as I have historically gone as cheap as possible when buying (electronic) toothbrushes. I got it as a promotional give away last year. It has multiple settings regarding timer, intensity etc. comes with a charging glass and a usb case for when traveling. It does take a fair bit of effort to get use to. I hated it for at least 3 days, but figured I would give it a week. Now I enjoy using it. It is a very different feel to conventional electronic toothbrushes

Good info. Thanks. But I’ve just ended up confusing the schit out of myself.

I was thinking Oral B but it looks like Philips might be the way to go. But soooo many of them I might just set a price and pick the one closest.

Depends how serious you are about the health of your teeth. The more expensive ones has more features compared to the ones for under a R1000 or so.

I personally have the Oral B Genius 8000 and I love it. Has loads of features. Paid R1750 or so at Dischem last year September.

I know they do go on sale every now and then, just keep an eye out.

Hahahahaha,

it was a lot simpler before all these new tech toothbrushes came out.
what still catches me it that the toothbrush suddenly stops after 2min. It buzzes every 30seconds so you can change the quad you are brushing. And then the mood ruined! Just as you are enjoying that last bit of brushing! NOTHING!

you can start it again, but it’s not the same.

I bought an oral b pro 2500 from ebucks in June last year, and they have replaced it 3 times because it stopped working

You don't need anything more than the Pro range at R700-900 range depending on the current specials.

Anything cheaper doesn't have Li-ion batteries and isn't worth it.

Anything more expensive is suffering from serious diminishing returns.

As for Oral B vs Philips I haven't seen the philips heads readily available in the third party space...but then I also haven't looked for them.

This one comes with the travel case which is quite useful.

Been using the basic rechargeable one for years never had any issues:

And use these replacement heads also without any issues
