Well today I returned to the site, this time to find 2 NeoTel vans and troop of workers busy pulling on a black cable of sorts. So I stop and ask the person closest to me what the cables are for. The answer came: "Cables for the phone". After some more prompting it came to light that ndeed it was fibre claas cable. So there you have it. NeoTel is layning fibre, who knows where it is going, but it is going.

Orange fiber pipes?

I just spoke to a Telkom guy, who was installing my phone line... he says all the empty orange pipes are NeoTel... he starts working for them in August, and he will be feeding both copper and fibre into the pipes...
IF you are right you just made my day! I wonder what will happen. Would it be best to stay with telkom cause once Neotel is launched I can be pretty sure telkom WILL lower their prices. This will be so intresting to see. Who will be the cheapest. Such beautiful words!
For me it's not about price... it's about who ISN'T Telkom.
Telkom has had competition in other avenues and only adjusted prices when court orders were issued.

The orange pipes in Richards Bay are for Neotel (remember TATA is a shareholder of Neotel and they have TATA steel in Richards bay). I have a buddy who is doing the contract work for them. You will notice that they have linked the pipes right through to the Submarine station in Mtunzini (down the old N2) (even entering at Telkoms Building). They seem to have a stratergy of linking up all the educational institutions with fibre first....hence the orange pipe run down Via Ricardia road to Richtech college. It would then make sense to use the institutions as fibre hubs for further expansion of their network.
The pipes look a little large for immediate Blown fibre implementation but perhaps smaller feeders the size of straws will be added at a later date.
Info for those that dont know....Blown Fibre is an optic fibre not unlike a strand of human hair, coated with a rough textured substance. This fibre can then be blasted at terriffic speed through a duct (straw, pipe etc) enabling fast installations, repairs, replacement of fibre systems.

Ya thats right we have a TATA steel that opened here. Guess what they use electric ovens. just like Hillside,Bayside,RBM,RBCT,Foscor they all use electric machines cause its cheaper. So Richards Bay is a heavy consumer of electricity. They reported in the Baywatch that this will just up electricity usage in Richards Bay. Hmm. But its cool cause Richards Bay is really getting bigger by the day and thats good. We getting Neotel soon. 
Interesting theory about the strategy being used.... down our way it is all the Govt. aided institutions, old age homes, schools and children's homes that seem to have had priority.... I guess it is Telkom working with the Municipality in these cases at least here in Durban.....

Actually... most of the installs in Durban are Neotel... I been stopping and checking...

Neotel will only use copper as a last resort. fibre=Brit fiber=US
Saw some blue pipes on Lynwood PTA the other day. I'm guessing thats Telkom.
heheh sure, somewhere south of Durban..... I speak mainly for the Zone and Westville... Ive only ONCE seen a Neotel board and that was by Queens Avenue in Westville... For the rest? Telkom *shrugs.... (nice try though
