I`m ordering adsl online, and they gave me a list of four modems. Theres no indication of what they cost.... only this stupid list.

  • Mega 105
  • mega 200
  • Billion
  • USB
Whatever that means

Should I choose one of those, or order one from somewhere else?

Who are you ordering adsl from?
Billion I hear are very good, I would stay away from USB if you have more than one PC that needs to connect at a later stage, I have a USB modem from when I was in the UK, use it as a backup.
Maybe do a search on www.jump.co.za for a cheaper modem?

Telkom, I`ll get a different ISP

Was figuring... just get the line installed, and then buy some cheap bandwidth from other ISPs

There are isp's that supply the adsl line at a cheaper rate than Telkom's R152 p/m.

Go with a wireless router where you switch the wireless off as well to save on the electricity bill, if you are not going to use wireless then go for a 4 port modem so you can connect other computers in the future.

Firstly, dont get the Telkom routers, they are crap.
The billion router from Telkom is abt R900 for ADSL modem/wireless (54mbs) router. They are good.
Can get it cheaper elsewhere or get a wireless N router/modem.
Got my one, R1200, from Kalahari.net - bloody awesome and has 10 yr warranty.

You can get billion 400G or billion 800VGT from telkom.
The 800VGT>VoIP/802.11g ADSL2+ VPN Firewall Router with PSTN Fixed-line support. The device supports an ADSL2+ port for linkup to the DSL access network, but also allows for setup of a WAN port, for connecting to other forms of broadband, like WiMAX or IBurst.
The 400G> ADSL2/2+,802.11g Wireless AP with WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup), and WPA-PSK/ WPA2-PSK Support firewall router.
I have worked with those router's and they have been working very well since i got them.I would advise you to get one of those. :)
