Hey guys. I have a PS1 SCPH-1002, apparently this is one of the first units sold.
Problem is the laser is busted and it's been sitting in the garage for the past five years. I have been looking for a laser, but they are impossible to find. I love retro gaming and consoles, I really don't wanna throw it away, does anyone have some suggestions where I could find a laser for it? I even have one of those Namco guns for it.

Cheers

eish i dont know where you can get one of those things. You could try on ebay but i suggest you just get another ps1. I am sure you can get one for R150.

You can buy replacement lasers from the following website -

Delivery to the UK took about 3-4 weeks.

I went for the KSM-440 BAM to replace an KSM-440 AAM, as the later model is supposed to be more reliable than the original one. I had to swap the top plate, grey piece in the picture, for the original black one on the AAM, as they are slightly different shapes. This was just a matter of removing two screws, unclipping and sliding out the new plate for the old one.

However, it's not as easy as just replacing the drive, you then have to calibrate it. The following website gives advice on this -

Despite following the instructions and some more here -

I have not been able to get my ps1 to play games at the moment and I am still messing about with the settings. It will play cd's, so I know that the laser is working correctly.

The grey old PS1 is so nostalgic. A certain family member's girlfriend somehow broke the controller inputs while I was away at a LAN. The family member claimed he's gonna take it in for repairs, I've never seen the console or controllers ever again since.
