Orthognatic (jaw) surgery?

I started developing pain in my tempromandibular joint about a year ago and went to the orthodontist who told me I have a pretty severe overbite and I'll need braces and double jaw surgery down the line to fix my bite properly.

I got the braces recently and would appreciate some advice from anyone who's had the surgery done as I'll need to get it in the next 6 -9 months.

My main concern is the cost of the surgery. Do medical aids generally pay for these types of surgery? I heard that medical aids consider it "cosmetic" and the thus won't cover it (I'm on a mid-tier plan with Bestmed).

Also, any recommendations for a surgeon the Pretoria/Joburg region?

The problem here is its a pretty important operation seeing its happening in your head.
1-I would suspect the surgery cost depends on quality of specialist, quality of implants used. Lets say R250 000.
2-I would then suspect the cosmetic part of fabricating the teeth lets say R500 000.00 not covered by medical aid.
3-Gap cover may only pay out if applicable to codes recognised by your medical aid to begin with.

It is difficult to make a guess on line.
To see you will have to chose a specialist, quality of implants, he will have a trusted partner for the fabrication of the teeth. Get a qwote and present to medical aid to get a more precise idea.
 
My daughter has hers done years ago. Medical aid picked up the tab. Was on Discovery Comprehensive
It was the best thing we've done medical wise.
Can't remember the doctors name but he is in moreleta park behind the checkers Cntr. I'll try get his name because he is apparently the best and he did a great job.
 
I had it done. Went through the orthodontics and then the surgery.
Medical aid paid for almost everything as there were motivations that it was not cosmetic
Had it done by Dr Herman Kluge
He did the surgery and managed to remove wisdoms at the same time (apparently he is one of very few who can do it this fast)
Recovery wasnt bad at all. I had worse recovery breaking my hand.
Expect pretty hectic weight loss as you are on a liquid diet for some time
Pain was very manageable and I abandoned the oxycodone pain killers by the end of day 2
Sleeping can suck a little bit, I had to sleep upright in a chair for several days

Overall not a bad experience

Hi there! I am also based in Pretoria and am due to undergo the same procedure soon. It’s very expensive and I was hoping medical aid would pay for part of it - did they pay for the whole jaw surgery bill and if so how much was it? And which medical aid were you on?

I think almost all of it was paid. I cannot recall exact amounts but I dont think I paid anything and if I did, it was very little. There was motivation needed though that changed this from cosmetic to necessary
 
Discovery Comprehensive at the time and I think it was in the region of R27 000 but that was about 10yrs back if not longer.
 
My daughter had it on Discovery Classic Comprehensive. The hospital bill was covered, as was anaesthetist, but Discovery consider that procedure to be cosmetic (despite the bite problems we were dealing with), so they covered only a small part of the surgeon's R50K fee. They covered 20K in error (because a consultant told us in writing that's what they'd cover, without checking savings account first), but would only otherwise have covered R4K.

What year did she have her surgery?
