QUESTION:
How can I add an icon to the OS X Menu Bar to allow for locking my Mac?

ANSWER:
Open the "Keychain Access" application. From there select "Preferences" and tick the box next to "Show keychain status in menu bar".

Now you can click on the lock icon to allow for locking your screen.

You can also use the keyboard shortcut SHIFT + CTRL + EJECT/POWER to put the display to sleep or configure your own shortcut by means of an application like Keyboard Maestro. The lock icon makes it easier when you don't have a physical keyboard present, such as when accessing your Mac remotely from a mobile device.
