I'm new to Mac and I just bought a iMac on Friday and now I see there is a new OS coming this July. Is the OS available as a free upgrade or must I now buy the new OS just after I bought the iMac?

No, I thing you need to buy one of the Macs announced yesterday to qualify for the free upgrade

The OS X Mountain Lion Up-to-Date upgrade will be available at no additional charge from the Mac App Store to all customers who purchase a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after June 11, 2012.

Customers must request their Up-to-Date upgrade within 30 days of purchasing their Mac computer. Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between June 11, 2012 and the date when Mountain Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from the OS X Mountain Lion release date to make a request.

When Mountain Lion becomes available in July, come back to this page for details on how to request your copy of Mountain Lion.

@bwana - Thanks. I feel slightly screwed over, I think they could have given it to anyone who bought a iMAC this year, but it is luckily not expensive to buy the new OS ($20).

Benitok, I just hope you have an fast, uncapped data link. OSX updates come over the App Store these days. Prepare yourself for a 4 GB download :-(

Why? Microsoft doesn't give you the new version of Windows for free?

It's cheap as chips, and besides, Lion will continue working just fine and be fully supported once Mountain Lion becomes available.

I suppose you could always return the iMac and buy one of the new MBPs or MBAs instead, since those are the only ones that they're giving the free upgrade to.

Many of the blogging and news sites recorded that every new Mac purchased after yesterday's WWDC qualifies ?

For example:

For that reason it's possibly best for him to challenge them or return it to reset the purchase date.

If you look at the apple store only those machines updated yesterday state you'll get a free update.

And that's for devices purchased from Apple. Who knows what rules Core is going to abide by.
