While we're talking about the license: A colleague bought a secondhand Mini to run Linux on. Didn't get any discs with it anyway. Now he wants to load OSX. I lend him my disc (we have similar models).

1. Since all Macs come with the OS and assuming the device and software is not separable, is it OK for me to help a friend with the install media, assuming it's the same version of the OS?

2. It didn't work - the installer loaded up and then complained that it "cannot be installed on this computer." I assume there is some checking of the hardware. Mine is the last "silent update" revision (i.e. I have a 1.33GHz G4 while the box says 1.2GHz).

What's the correct way to go about getting the software? I assume there must be some install media replacement service?

The installer wont work because of the hardware check - you could try swapping the hdd or perhaps using an external case.

Otherwise you'll need to buy a new, full copy.

It's not the hard disc, that much I know because I replaced mines disc with a bigger non-apple one and did a fresh install. Suppose I'll ask someone at the Guru Bar next time I'm at the store.

Each installation disk has a plist file that checks the model number of the machine - my suggestion was to put his hdd in your mini and then install. ;) Alternatively you could try putting his mini in firewire mode and try installing from yours.
