OSX Server

Does anyone have experience with OSX server?

I was wondering if running a mail server from there would be a easier alternative to some Linux box with a console interface. And the fact that you can just about buy 3x Mac minis for the price of MS exchange makes it a lot more affordable too.
 
For boxes, I prefer running ubuntu... and the console interface is the key factor why... so much of the stuff you need is hidden by the GUI.
Since OSX is Linux underneath the hood, you could, in theory run sendmail or whatever mail server you choose.

No, OsX is not Linux underneath the hood. It's Darwin, an open source Unix under the hood.

Same same... all my commands work... and several utilities I use, are there... by default... so to me its Linux. (well on my own Mac anyway)
 
The OSX servers are very easy to set up and maintain. OSX is very strong in GUI where you may find yourself doing lots of text or script based work on Linux. I would go hosted. If you have the Mac hardware to host - why not. Make sure you have a good supporting backup strategy though. Again - with OSX server probably mind-numbingly simple to setup and maintain.

Are you protected on the firewall end though?

Yep the firewalls are setup. At the moment we have an old Linux box still on 10.04 LTS. That is why I was thinking of getting the mid-range Mac Mini for mail. Like you said, they are virtually bulletproof and backups and super basic the setup and maintain.

Do you guys know how well Outlook plays with the calender and contacts sync with OSX server hosted mail?
