Other broadband options in SA?

Are there no other broadband connection types possible in SA other than wireless operators?

Surely in apartment high rises or in gated estates there'd be a cable system that would provide high speed internet? No?

I live in Brisbane, Australia, capital of the state of Queensland. This capital city and the 2 other large ones (Sydney and Melbourne) have a cable network offered by competing telco to the big, bad government one. I'm on this cable network and it's excelent.

Really bad to read of all the problems for internet access in SA, I'm guessing that it all went downhill when Apartheid ended and everyone was allowed to vote? I hear ads for 'government' on 5FM internet streaming and those people sound clueless!
 
Pretty much all of govt is clueless thats why we're in this position when it comes to broadband. Look at our ministers and even the president...taking him a few months to figure out how to use a pen to sign a new bill. Fixed line and wireless are pretty much all we have..

SA actually now have many options on Internet connectivity

iburst ,ADSL,GPRS,3G ,HSDPA 3.5G - the only one we dont have is Cable Tv

What we are now fighting for is Lower price

Prices are still too high compare to overseas offerings, therefor Broadband penetration is poor here.

Must clear this up , to foreigners

No, ending of Apartheid has nothing to do with over-priced telecoms in SA,

Current situation mainly caused by long term monopoly combined with a manipulative foreign investor Thintana (SBC + Telecom Malaysia )

This created the last dinosaur of its kind ,it can bully the consumer anyway it wants, and they did ..

If you want to, you could try to help us in our struggle... Get an Australian journalist interested, send him/her to these forums and www.hellkom.co.za to get informed, and create a couple of articles on the internet status in SA. Do this series as a parody, so our government becomes more of a laughing stock for the rest of the Common Wealth! It might just pressure our government into real action...

Gotta feel for the South Africans, I moved to australia 5 years ago, and have since been enjoying a fast cheap Internet connection.

It would be nice if more family and friends over there could get online, but this is made hard thanks to Telkom!

We have our own Telkom equivalent here, Telstra.... obviously the offerings are better, but the max speed we can get on a typical ADSL line accross Australia is 1.5mpbs, and people still complain. Those on certain exchanges in capital cities can get 24mbps, but the complaining continues. People here don't appreciate what they get, when I inform them of the offerings in South Africa, they just can't belive it. I'm going back there in a few months and I'll be stuck with a 350MB plan (GRPS/EDGE) for a few months, it's not going to be pretty, considering I burn through 2GB a day in Australia.

The cable network isn't as stable, the prices aren't as affordable, considering Telstra run most of it. If Optus covers your suburb, you're in luck, cheaper cable plans.

Sorry Aussie, Adelaide is also covered by Cable, aswell as Perth. Just thought I would add that in :D

South Africa, apparently, as reported by the news, has the worst ADSL offering the world.

Now I'm going to refrain from being racist on here, but if Nelson Mandella wasn't ellected, I'm sure us whites would've made better plans to fix South Africa.

You couldnt be more wrong dghough91 SA's current broadband dilema has nothing to do with Nelson Mandela or the "Black" government, what they are doing is compunding an issue that already existed! A monopoly like Telkom cannot be built in 12 years... Telkom has always been the monoply in SA and they have always been corrupt and oppose to competition!! In actual fact i would go as far as to say that the situation during apartheid was worse because there was absolutely no transparency that time between Telkom and the people of SA. There are a large number of underhanded dealings that went on with Telkom during apartheid that South Africans still dont know about today!!
At least today we have transparency, freedom of the press and the ability to contribute to forums like this which puts pressure on Telkom and government to change their ways and drop their prices. We have alot of broadband/internet connectivity options available to us, its low prices that we are fighting for as Gooku said!!

I'm just trying to clarify that the telkom today is not the same telkom from the apartheid era. Today telkom is a company with shareholders and totally different goals. But I think this is a bit off topic - please continue here:
