We are looking at upgrading our security. Right now we have a (very old) internal alarm connected to armed response. We are looking at getting outdoor beams around the house, that work independently from the existing and ancient system.

I see a few wireless alarm systems available like this one on takealot and the one reviewer mentions using the indoor sensors outside. https://www.takealot.com/wifi-home-security-system-alarm-wireless-ip-gsm-system-kit/PLID52853898

Then we have been looking at more robust options like kwebeams.

This is considerably more expensive. We like the fact that it comes with an app as well as I have no idea how you'd arm/disarm beams without an app if you're leaving or coming home.

We don't have any experience with outdoor beams. I don't get how a 90 degree beam is effective on a 180 degree wall, as it will always have a blind spot. So you'd essentially have to put two beams back to back to get the best coverage. Quality beams go for R2k a pop, so you'd need R8K to cover 4 180 degree walls, not including everything else you need to go with it. It also doesn't make sense placing beams in the garden facing the house as this makes them vulnerable as well.

So the question really is: do you have a (cheap) wireless alarm system and does it work for you? What sort of outdoor beams would you recommend if any?

Based on my experience with these two systems I recommend :

Have a look at the new Hikvision AX Pro Alarm system. You "ad as you go " - works great.

I also have an older ( and dumb) system - Roboguard. Had it for about 12 years and absolutely NO issues. Just a battery change every 4 years ( I really cant remember when last I changed the batteries - but is was long before Covid).

I have a ids alarm, the outdoor pir goes to a receiver which goes to the alarm system. We had a few false alarms, but then I noticed the beam work from 3 to 12 volt, and the company use 3 volt, I changed the battery to 6 volt, now zero false alarm.
