Outlook for PC shipments worsens: IDC

dunno.... may be the slump is also coz many people have purchased a PC in last 3 yrs, and its still working well, so those users now rather buy a mobile gadget.
but we all know a tablet really cannot fully replace a true pc... and those existing PCs aint gonna last forever.
perhaps in a year or 2, there may be increase in PC sales again, once the excitement of tablet starts to wean?
Still ... PC manufacturers will also have to adjust the format of the pc... maybe smaller lighter with wireless connectivity.
i think the all-in-ones could do well... just still a bit on pricey side at the moment
 
Tablets can't replace PC's... people will buy new ones sooner or later.. adding to the pain is probably windows 8 which people don't want, like or understand...
 
Sure tablets or Smartphones can not replace PC's 100%, but they sure as hell can lessen the dependency on one.

People no longer need to run to a desktop to catch up on mail or Google the latest gossip and Facbook friends. They do that now on devices mentioned and that makes PC no more a primary device for communication.

People upgrade primary 1st and then look at other devices.
 
I haven't booted my home desktop for over a year now.
I use a laptop and a phablet and that pretty much covers all my needs.
PC's are going to become specialty hardware for gamers IMO.
 
They should really stop using the term "PC" because it's far to ambiguous. Phone, tablets, laptops and desktops are all personal computers. Even if we exclude laptops, tablets and phones - do macs count as PCs?

Desktop PCs are still the best value for money. Phones tend to need replacing more often than you think. From just sucking after 2 years, to dead (non-removable) batteries, to breakages and even "free contract upgrades" leaves the mobile industry at least renewing a lot of customer base every 2 years.

Other than gaming, Desktop (and laptops) hit the sweet spot in processing power a while ago. Those computers are still going strong and don't need to be replaced every 2 years like phones do.

I still haven't seen anyone do anything productive with the tablets yet.
 
This is due to ridiculous hold up on not including iPads as PC's. Apparently something that MS convinced them of a couple of years ago

They most certainly can. Maybe for some people no, but for many others, it most certainly is a substitute for a PC. And the sales numbers back this up
 
I love these gloom and doom headlines: "PC shipment outlook worsens". The PC will always have a place... In very specific order of importance ( :D ):

  1. Gaming Rigs
  2. Dev PCs
  3. Servers PCs
  4. Media Centers
  5. Office PCs

The day tablets replace the above, I'll eat humble pie,but I really don't see that happening.

Actually, dev'ing on iPads is becoming quite popular. And in the office, you see more and more iPads.
Gaming PC's are being replaced by XBox and Playstation, and Media Centre's are dying out in favour of cloud connected devices like AppleTV, XBox, PS, Roku etc.
Servers? They don't count as PC's (The 'Personal' part doesn't hold true).

But yes, there is still a market for PC's in those categories you mentioned

Good points guys, spot on there.
 
Even if businesses are buying iPads etc I'm sure they're only in addition to PCs -there will always be around one PC per person in an office, and I can't see that happening anytime soon. You just can't do a full day's work on a tablet. And obviously times have been difficult for businesses all over the world recently so they're probably just putting off buying new machines for a bit longer, they'll pick up eventually though. Might be good for consumers anyway, cut some of the worse competition out and force the others to compete on price.

They are normally in addition to PC's, but what ends up happening is the PC is hardly ever used, and upgrade cycles slow down
