Outlook phantom mail in Outbox

Have a client using Outlook 2003 - the Outbox is empty but send/receive details shows sending 1 of 1, then fails and returns an error.

I've done a scanpst which shows no error and the pc is virus free.

I noticed that it does two send processes - the first is clean, then it repeats the process which fails.

Apart from creating a new pst and importing from the old does anyone have any idea how to solve this one ?

I've had that before with Outlook 2003. It was a 'read receipt' that didn't want to go through for some reason. Backed up all my mail folders, deleted all profiles, and created a profile from scratch and restored the backups to that profile. Problem solved.
