Cape Town – The R100 million “super” police station planned for Muizenberg has received vehement opposition from the Social Justice Coalition (SJC), with activists and supporters of the organisation taking their frustrations to the police’s doorstep in protest.

A group of SJC members on Tuesday staged peaceful demonstrations outside the provincial headquarters of the SA Police Service (SAPS) in Green Point, against the imminent upgrade and extension of the police station, situated on top of a steep hill against the Muizenberg mountain range.

The Cape Argus broke the story which had outraged several poorer communities in Cape Town.
“How can one police station cost R100m? Are they trying to build another Nkandla with a fire pool at that police station?” the SJC’s Chumile Sali asked.

“We are here to oppose the plans to spend a R100m on a police station for the white and safer community of Muizenberg while police know that there are communities that are in need of police resources, communities like Vrygrond, Nyanga, Masiphumelele and Makhaza and many others,” Sali said.
“Police must stop prioritising white and rich communities, because we know people who live in those areas have access to private security.”

Muizenberg councillor Aimee Kuhl said while she supported the upgrade to the Muizenberg police station, she had proposed that it not be extended.
Kuhl said initial plans which were presented five years ago only entailed the upgrading of the old building, which was built in the 1900s.“Where the Muizenberg police station is now is in a white privileged area the community that needs services, that needs schools and clinics and needs a police station is Vrygrond,” Kuhl said.

Senior SJC researcher Dalli Weyers said there were “many other police stations that have a heavier burden of crime are also in dire need of upgrading”.

Muizenberg is a tourist hotspot. Tourists are extremely sensitive to crime and will simply not go to a place that has a high crime rate. Without tourists there are no people for the people in Vrygrond, Nyanga, Masiphumelele and Makhaza to leech from.
 
The gravy train is the way some contractors work. Get rich quick, not work hard and give people jobs.

how bad is the crime in muizenberg. building this on the cape flats would make more sense tbh. although lavender hill and other volatile areas are nearby. that 100 mill figure just boggles the mind though. surely that could be distributed better.

how about filling the SAPS vacancies you turds? that would have a great impact than this gravy train contract. give us more police ffs.

The race issue is going to be brought up more and more, as the general (and poor) population want what the middle and upper class (and mainly white people) have. The ANC are using anti-white rhetoric as a weapon to keep power. This is like poking a beehive. I don't see things getting any better on the race relation front in the near future. I actually don't see anything positive for the average middle class folk tbh. Government is going to have to spend less money in the "rich" areas due to increased pressure from the poor, and infrastructure there will steadily get worse.

Mega-upgraded R100m cop shop for Cape mountain-side

Cape Town – An elaborate extension of the Muizenberg police station will require large-scale excavation of the mountain, with the cost estimated at about R20 000 a square metre, the Cape Argus has reliably learnt.

The R100 million project, when completed, would include two new buildings, one of them two floors higher than the existing heritage building which houses the current police station, would be built where a large part of the mountain once would have been.

While the police refused to take responsibility for what would be a multimillion-rand price tag, saying the Muizenberg police station would be fully funded by the national Department of Public Works, it has since emerged that the planning and design of the station was contained in the police’s 2013/14 annual report.

Senior researcher at the Social Justice Coalition (SJC) Dalli Weyers said: “That makes it clear that even where Public Works takes the lead, the SAPS has a hand.”

The police – which initially failed to respond to the Cape Argus’s questions about the mega-upgrade to the Muizenberg police station as well as plans for others in Cape Town – revealed that there were three new stations being planned. These would be in Tafelsig, Makhaza and Nyanga.

However, the SJC, which has been at the forefront of the battle for additional policing resources in crime-ridden areas, poked holes in the police’s story.
Weyers said the police’s annual reports for the 2013/14 to 2015/16 financial years indicate that each year police undertook “site clearance” for a police station in Weltevreden in Nyanga and each year the target was reported as “not completed”.

He said the police report for 2015/16 also revealed a “not completed” status for the Tafelsig police station.
