Vancouver - An organisation that fights animal abuse is calling the slaughter of 100 sled dogs by an outdoor adventure company in British Columbia a bloodbath and police are investigating.

The British Columbia SPCA's manager of animal cruelty investigations said on Monday that an Outdoor Adventures Whistler employee was told to cull the dogs.

Marcie Moriarty says some dogs were shot, while others' throats were slit before their bodies were pitched into a mass grave.

Vancouver radio station CKNW radio is reporting that the company expected more sledding business in an anticipated post-Olympics tourism boom. But the boom never materialised and the sled dogs were killed last April.

On a related but OT point, the Iditarod is coming-up. I have a complaint. The Iditarod Trail is an 1100 mile annual Husky (dog) sleigh race finishing in Nome, Alaska. A man and animal race (and women – they have won occasionally [no gender bias here]). It is usually held over 3 days. I heard that it was being held over 10 days this year. Eleven hundred miles in 3 days is competitive. Eleven hundred miles in 10 days is a frosty amble (if it wasn’t so snowy you could stop for a picnic). Please tell me that I am wrong about the 10 days. It was just an error and not a debasement of the rules of the race.

Three divided into 1100 gives around 400 miles a day. A formidable (and reachable IMO) target for competitive mushers (mushing into the night and running alongside the sled so as not to tire the dogs). However, I will concede that I don’t know much about sled dog racing. Four hundred miles a day is stiff but presumably these are competitive, top-class mushers competing in a high-prestige race. Running all day is an ability shared by many tribes in SA (the Bushman for one). The big downside of that kind of running (for Caucasians) is overheating. You wouldn’t have this problem in Alaska. In addition, this race is not a way of life – the team would train to this peak. The dogs and human musher would eat hi-protein (scientifically formulated) foodstuff before and during the race. The equipment would be hi-tech. Teflon coated carbon fibre sled runners, super-light & comfy dog harnesses, the equivalent of Nike snow shoes etc. Doable IMO (with much effort).
