Today, August 26, I bought R150 to top-up my prepaid electricity and got 3.4 units in return. Not really sure of what was happening I bought another R200 and got 4.1 units in return. Can someone explain to me what is going on. I am aware of the new tarrif by City of Cape Town but is this how it will be? I need some education on this please. Thank you.

Are you renting or are you the owner?

Most likely a portion is being used for outstanding debt on the municipal account for the property. This could be for rates, refuse, water or sewerage charges that were not paid.

I had the same issue when my tenant stopped paying the water account to the municipality and then complained that he was getting less units when buying electricity. Only when the debt was settled did he get the normal allocation of units.

IBT, Incline block tariffs, tiered or step pricing

None of the tariffs will give him 4kwh for R200. That's R50/kwh.

It's most likely municipal debt on the property being recovered through prepaid electricity purchases.

CoCT is known for this.

If you're in a complex, this could happen on the first buy of the month:

+ R150 deposit
- R22.50 15% admin fee for meter reading company mafia
- R112 +- Eskom network charge

So you're left with R15.50 that goes towards electricity.

EDIT: Here is what happens when I put R1000 down

That's just plain rape in the ring piece, no vaseline.

Hi All. Thanks for the responses. I have discovered that this was my own error. I use a Waterswitch for both water and electricity. So when I buy water, I have to purchase it as electricity units but the credits has to be loaded to my water meter. In error, I actually purchased water thinking it was electricity. I discovered this when I tried loading to the electricity meter which did not work. This has been corrected.
