Overclocking

Hey guys, need your help. I've never dipped into overclocking before, but want to give it a go. Did a 3Dmark06 run last night and only scored +-11950...want to get this up

My system is:
Mobo: XFX 680i LT SLI
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz LGA775
CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS9700-NT
GFX: ASUS EN8800GT/G/HTDP/512M
RAM: 2048MB OCZ PC2-6400 DDR2-800 SLI-Ready Edition

The GFX and Case cooling is still stock. None of the mentioned equipment has been 'played' with yet so all still on stock.

Any help when it comes to overclocking will be much appreciated...heck, maybe if you have some of the same part and have overclocked them you can maybe post your clock speeds, voltages (and what ever else needs to be done).

Help a guy out here please.
 
Run cpuz and tell us whether or not the stepping/revision of your cpu is the G0 or B3. Also what are your current idle and load temps
 
Gonna copy/paste a post I wrote a few days back

I OC'd my old AMD 4600+ from 2.4Ghz to 2.85Ghz for around 3 years. I couldn't go further, otherwise it would become unstable, maxed out the voltage and what not, think it was a bad batch I got .

I OC'd my new E7400 from 2.8Ghz to 3.6Ghz. In 3D Mark 06 I gained around 3000 points. But it was kind of unstable without adding extra voltage. So I took it back down to 3.5Ghz, seems to be stable now.

If you do decide to OC, get a program called OCCT, this stress tests your PC to see if it's stable. I also recommend getting CPU-Z and Core Temp.

Also remember when you OC, lock your PCI-E frequency to 100Mhz, and your ram must be set 1 step down. I.e. if you have a DDR 2 - 800 RAM, set it to 667 in your bios. When your increase your FSB, everything else goes up as well. So it's important to lock your PCI-E and to step down your RAM by 1. Too lazy to do the math for this :P. But basically if you run CPU-Z, it will show your Memory in Mhz. If it goes too high your PC won't boot. So 1 step down + higher FSB will give around the same frequency as it was.

Also if you have an AMD system. You gotta set your HT multiplier 1 less. 5 x 200 (FSB) = 1000 Mhz which is the default. So you gotta stay around 1000Mhz. So if for example you OC to 250Mhz (FSB), then it would be 250 x 5 = 1250 which is too high, but 4 x 250 = 1000.

Installed CPU-Z and Speedfan. Made a screen print while on idle and then another after I ran 3DMark06 2 complete times and then made the 2nd screen print after I ran just the CPU tests;

Kuga, I'll read through your post/thread and check it out. Maybe something I should have said at the beginning is that I know nothing of overclocking and almost need some sort of a mentor to take me through the process.

Cool beans. I've done quite a lot of research on overclocking ;) If you want I could take you through the process more in depth or refer you to websites I found invaluable to me.
 
Would be great if you could post them here or send them on PM to me...I'll start reading through them. TBH...I'm ***** scared I do something wrong and break my baby ;)
