Hi There,

I would just like to know if there is a way to host your own website. I know you can register for a domain, but, is there a way to create your own domain so that other people pay u for the service and running ur very own web server from home, or something like that.

I know this sounds a little confusing, but what I want to do is to by myself a server, route it on my adsl line, host my own website with my OWN domain, etc...

Is there a way??

spiderz, I would have to disagree with you...

I've hosted a server on my home ADSL (512K) before where multiple users would connect to their sites and download mail too.

Look, it's not the most reliable or quickest connection - but it certainly is possible.

PHTech, here is what you need to do:

1) Sign-up for an account at FreeDNS - http://freedns.afraid.org/

FreeDNS is a free DNS service which has Dynamic DNS capabilities - which means that if when your dynamic IP address chages from your ISP site, your Internet domain name will always point to the most recent IP address which has been given to you by your ISP.

2) Once you have added your your desired Internet domain into the FreeDNS system, you must register a domain.

Go here http://co.za/ if you want a .CO.ZA domain name. It'll cost you R50.00. When registering your Internet domain, you must use these nameservers: ns1.afraid.org ns2.afraid.org ns3.afraid.org ns4.afraid.org

3) Get Dynamic DNS client software for your OS...

When your domain is alive and active from the .CO.ZA registrar, you should get the Dynamic DNS client software (http://freedns.afraid.org/scripts/freedns.clients.php) which will notify FreeDNS of any IP address changes on your ADSL line.

4) Enable Port-Forwarding.

On your ADSL modem, there should be a port forwarding feature. Point all the desired service ports to your server's local IP address.

Examples:

Port 80 (HTTP) -> 192.168.0.1
Port 25 (SMTP) -> 192.168.0.1

The above setup is easy and painless in my opinion - but the task is definitely a bit tricky if you're doing it for the first time!!

Regards,
Chris.

I would rather just rent a server and resell web hosting.

Remember that server of yours must be very reliable with backup power supply. But with ADSL it will already be unreliable, and if clients can`t get to their site when they want to :mad:

Save yourself the trouble and just rent a server.
