The weather in Cape Town this week had 'oxtail stew' written all over it so on Wednesday I was at Woollies and went looking. Double the price of the Spar special, but it had a great ratio of meat to bone, and just enough fat to provide the requisite flavour. 8 hours in the slow cooker, with some carrots, onion, celery, some tinned tomato, and a good slosh of red wine. Very satisfying. I bought cheaper elsewhere the last time, but it had a sort of gamey taste and smell that made me think it was maybe from a buffalo or wildebees not a genuine ox.
