Hi guys, currently got a 2015 P8 Lite, it costed R3400 when I got it.

I want a new phone now, been eyeing a few. The p20 lite seems nice, but at R6000, I don't know if it's worth it.

I use my phone a lot, web browsing, apps, banking, games (hearthstone mostly), doing online trading etc etc. So I do need a fast and responsive phone and I'm finding my p8 lags when switching between or opening apps (whatsapp etc.) and hearthstone is playable, but not like it used to be, quite slow.

Any recommendations?

I wouldn't mind a Xiaomi Note 5 or whatever, but not sure if I should be scared of chinese phones?

Spend R500 more and get the Nokia 7 plus, you going to get near flagship grade processor, better camera and scratch resistant glass.

It's the same processor, the Nokia 7 Plus is a slightly higher memory clocked version of it, think of the older version? The P20 lite clocks higher though, so it should be slightly better performance (but probably won't due to heating/throttling, it will be close to each other though). For day-to-day the P20 Lite's one would be better due to longer battery life. They both have toughened glass, the P20 has 2.5D design which is curved on the sides (I personally like this, unlike Samsung's Edge BS). The back camera is slightly better on the Nokia I think, but the front one of the P20 is way better.

A good feature of the Nokia is the 802.11ac support, though you probably will not need it on your phone.

The two phones are near the same, this is more a question of if you like EMUI and want to keep going with it (Huawei) or want a more stock experience (Nokia). Personally I'd go with the Nokia due to this overall. Hardware wise only, and how it's built, I'd go with the Huawei personally.

Do be careful to check that the South African version of these phones is the same as the ones internationally, some vendors (like LG) sell a cut-down version here. Don't think Huawei does this, not sure with Nokia. In regards to Sumen saying the Nokia is near flagship, both the phones are of the same mid range bracket, so ignore that.

In regards to needing to upgrade, what do you mean not like it used to? You can back up your stuff and just wipe it and re-download the apps. In regards to the Xiaomi, that would be around a 50% upgrade I would say, basing it on core clocks, double the RAM but the double performance would be offset by the 50% increase in pixels.

The P20 lite and Nokia phone are both near double the performance of yours looking at stats. Again, if you need this, that's up to you. Are you sure you are upgrading because you need to or just because you want to/feel you need to? If the money is there and you're probably going to splurge it, this would be fine, but if you are budget constrained, then I wouldn't do it. It's up to you.

You will have a noticeable difference in performance though, the newer EMUI versions are a lot better.

The Processors are not the same, they both have 8 cores but the Kirin 659 has 8 A-53 cores while the Snapdragon 660 has 4 A-73 cores and 4 A-53 cores.

They both use big.LITTLE setup where they will only use 4 cores at a time depending on how intense the task is. The Kirin 659 only has A-53 cores clocked at different speeds,The A-53 is geared towards power-efficency and not for high-performance as 4 A-73 cores are geared for in the Snapdragon 660.

Also GPU in the Snapdragon 660 is slightly better than the one the appears the Snapdragon 810.

Maybe I should reset the phone? Things that never used to lag, are starting to lag. I just assumed it's the 2GB RAM?

I'm not exactly sure how to 'clone' and save a phone though, can you even?

If not for the laggy ness of some apps and stuff, I wouldn't even care for upgrading.

Most things backup to the cloud. If you set it up correctly, everything will be safe. I also use an app to sync folders of the apps that don't cloud backup.
Im paranoid, before I reset, I check if it's all synchronized. The 2 games I play backup to Google Play Games and everything else to Drive or somewhere on Google's servers.
