P20 Pro vs. Galaxy Note9 -Which would you go for?

So now that the Note9 has arrived, I figured this would make for an interesting topic seeing as Huawei are now the 2nd largest smartphone maker, hot on the heals of Samsung.

We have now reached a point where we have some real High End Premium Android beasts

We still have the LG V40, OnePlus 6T, Pixel 3 XL and the next Mate coming, but things are still vague around those.

In terms of Camera
It seems the P20 Pro is still ahead with the 109 DxOMark rating thanks to the Leica triple camera lense. Other than the scene detection the Note9 has, it does not seem like it has moved that much from what the S9+ brought earlier this year. Looks like Huawei may have taken everyone by surprise here.

Display
Samsung seems to have knocked it out the ballpark again with their QHD SuperAMOLED Infinity Display. Will be interesting to see how DisplayMate rate it.

Design
The P20 Pro seems to be the more ergonomic device with its higher screen to body ratio. I remember even the Mate10 Pro being a lot easier to handle versus my Note8, and with the Note9 being a bit wider than its predecessor I think the same will ring true vs. P20 Pro.

Battery
Finally a 4000mAh battery in the Note, however with its larger and higher resolution display I wonder how well it will do against the P20 Pro?
The one thing that kills the Note9 for me here is that it still uses the old Fast Charging 2.0 which will take a lot longer with such a large battery, while other manufacturers like Huawei have the SuperCharger which obliterated a lot of the competition despite the larger 4000mAh battery the P20 Pro has over its competitors earlier this year. Weird how Samsung fell behind in this regard, maybe due to the Note7 fiasco?

Other features
DeX seems to have followed what Huawei did with the Desktop Mode last year with the Mate10 Pro and P20 Pro, taking away the DeX Dock and replacing it with a cable to HDMI port, which makes a lot more sense, glad they finally took the hint here.


I'm terms of price
This is where I think Samsung may be losing it, with their Apple-like pricing and where the P20 Pro begins looking better for most people. The worst part is that it seems as though we won't be getting the 512GB Note9, it's not listed on any local retailers from the Samsung website.

The wider screen is purposefully designed to create a better note experience and the S Pen comes packed with a few new surprises. If you a person who likes to note down ideas or designs on the go, the Note 9 is the better option

Price aside, sure. But even me who do take a lot of notes at work, used the Note 8 for this purpose, and found it really just to small for proper meeting notes. A tablet is really what one really needs for this purpose.

And this is probably why I'm skipping teh note9 and hopefully can get the S4 tab.

The quality of the Huawei is just unmistakable. Where the were 3 years ago, and where they are today, they are definitely in the top 2 when I start recommending phones.

Hands down the P20 Pro takes the cake. I honestly don't think that anything in pro mode can come close to the Huawei. Even the older Mate model is still beter than the latest Samsung.

The amount of distance between the Huawei camera and the rest of the field on the camera front, is the same distance that Samsung stretches ahead with there display. Just nothing better out there at the moment.

The P20 Pro with those dual colours is just wow beautiful, who would want to put a cover on that? The Samsungs infinity display design is now already old, and they need to shake things up for the S10.

That charger I tested and compared the note8 to the Mate10, and the note8 was beaten comprehensively. It felt overall if the Huawei was cheating with the inhumanely fast 30min, but when all was done, it was quicker to finish with even a bigger battery than the note8.

Let's just be fair here... Samsung brought the DeX with the required adapter before it was possible at OS level to bring this to the phone like Huawei did with just a cable. This was only possible with Oreo and the Note8 launched with Nougat. But that probably didn't excuse them to try and get more money from us with the S9

Price. I think all smartphone manufactures is losing the plot. But I guess with all the effort and research going into these devices, we can't expect to pay nothing right.... oh wait, how does OnePlus do it???

Galaxy Note 9.

The P20 didn't beat the S9 according to GSM Arena;

But the P20 Pro fails to impress in video, and does so in multiple areas. No stabilization in 4K video means jerky handheld clips bordering on unusable, while the (admittedly very smooth) EIS in 1080p leaves vids softer than your average FullHD. And for all its zoom creds, the P20 Pro can't get anywhere near to the Galaxy's video quality at 2x and 3x magnification.

In the end, both these phones will satisfy your cravings for high-quality photos, and each will do something slightly better than the other. Well, alright, the Galaxy is the obvious choice for video and selfies, while Huawei needs a little more work on the former and, the way we see it, a conceptual redesign of the latter (lower pixel count, autofocus). We've given you the samples, check them against your priorities and take your pick.

Overall the S9 is better;

the Galaxy S9+ has that extra wide aperture, optical stabilization, image stacking of its own, and some very advanced noise reduction algorithms, so it's not exactly a slouch either. The best bit about is perhaps that you don't have to deliberate which mode to use - Auto works just fine.

The Galaxy is easier to live with, because you just snap away without much thought, but on the P20 Pro you can get some pretty amazing shots with Night mode, given the right scene, while the regular mode images are at least as Good as the Galaxy's.

The selfie contest this time around is an easy one - the Galaxy just wins. Hold on, what happened to the 3:1 resolution advantage of the P20 Pro? Well, 24MP is fine and dandy and you can, indeed, extract heaps of detail from its front-facing cam, only you need to be a particular distance away from the phone, and we find it to be too close. The Galaxy is a lot more versatile thanks to its autofocusing 8MP shooter.

Not saying the P20 is bad, but the S9 has a lot more to offer.

I think the difference of opinion is auto vs manual. Auto mode I think the S9 still takes it, but in manual/pro mode the Huawei takes it. You have things like more options with ISO and aperture on the Huawei

In recent times, Samsung begun to coast. There were not massive improvements in the S9 from the S8. I was always a big Samsung fan but the Note 9 lacks the innovation I expect from such a premium products.

Also there is a plateau in innovation from generation to generation. Hauwei has yet to experience theirs, as they went from producing complete shyte to something decent in a pretty short space of time.
