I've used BitTorrent overseas and would like to know if anyone in SA has used it and how I should set up my settings to connect

Thanks
SOB

Bittorrent??? Whats that? Is it some kind of new Black Magic that will keep the lions and rhino's that terrorise us - away???

BTW - i've typed this message out - at the one computer in our village - its an old 286 with windows 0.99 beta

There arent any specific BT settings, just make sure you get a decent router (not telscum router) go to www.portforward.com and configure your router for port forwarding, your bittorrent client should be listed there. There are quite a few sites you can check out for increasing speed and maybe you could try this little program aswell, www.cfos.de (choose cFos speed)

I've used bittorrent and experienced it to be rather slow with torrents here in SA. A better(speedy) idea would be to try out saDC++ and to connect to a local DC-Hub. The local downloads are marginally faster than a normal torrent download, for me anyway.
Do anyone know of any good local DC hubs?

thanks a lot for the help so far. I'll check out everything and let you know. ferris , i'll send ur message by giraffe :)

Consider signing up for an Internet Solutions offering and use their inclusive newsgroup access. As far as content goes its as good as bt for recent stuff and you can always make requests for older material.

EDIT - I have a Telkom account and while it does work just fine for bt the cap is a killer. Just make sure to fine tune your router to forward the right port.

i use Torrents all the time with no problem.. in fact i've downloaded over 250GB since i got DSL and i've always had full line speed.

lots of people report problems.. if only they ran their Routers in Bridge mode ;)

*edit*

oh and, if only they didn't use the settings the techies left them with!!

I've tried to forward my ports but still no joy. I'll call Telkom tomorrow to check the numbers for the DNS servers coz I did not get both. Any other ideas of what might be going wrong...please

thanks

No need for port forwarding, use UTorrent and as PostmanPot said, use bridging mode (Which shouldnt really matter but if u arent getting anyware in route mode tis worth a shot) As far as Telkom Internet goes u might have a problem using P2P with a Shaped account.
Telkom DNS Servers : 196.25.255.34 (Primary)
196.25.255.3 (Alternate)
