Overseas gaming buddies are telling me to get this - http://ui.skype.com/download.html - saying it's a "must have". Anyone try it? Or know anything more about it? I have downloaded but not installed it yet, in case there's a spyware catch . What makes it different from say MSN chat's voice option?

It doesn't seem to have any spyware according to Adaware. Wonder if it will be affected by port prioritization.

Well one difference that I can see is it supports NAT which messenger didnt support - not sure about v6 though.

As for port priority its not HTTP, FTP or SMTP and the book as written by Telkom seems to think this is the extent of the web - so the chances are it will be bottom of the pile. Second to that carrying voice over the internet could impact on their revenue so i'd guess it would never be a priority.

The minimum requirement is to open up outgoing TCP port 80.

Seems like just the thing

feature: implemented port can be specified under options->connection

Of course, VoIP is illegal in South Africa.

Just as the Post Office made sure it is illegal to deliver pizza to stay viable, Telkom has ensured it will stay viable by forcing South Africa into the telecoms dark ages by insisting that VoIP has to be illegal.

I have been using it for about a month. The sound is much better than Yahoo (which I have used before) but there is a lag of a couple of seconds (chatting overseas) and it breaks up a bit as well. Better than anything else I have used though.

The person who recommended it (who is much more techy than me) said the more people in SA who use it the better it will be - there were details but I forget.

Anyone else got any advice on this issue?

WIll the audio realy work, and can it be used with video?

As far as I know, this is only true when the phone call is eventually routed onto the land-based phone network, or originates on it. Voice traffic traveling purelf over the internet should be find; and if it isn't, we can all sit back and laugh ourselves hysterical at any attempts to implement such a regulation. The USA might be able to pull something like that off, but the local nation-state hasn't a hope in hell.
