I'd like to know if there are any P2P progs that can be used at full or v. fast speeds with TelkomInternet or Axxes Africa shaped dsl accounts?
Thanx,
Shiraz

if it was packet shaping then yeah you could find an obscure p2p protocol and sort things that way but its not, its port shaping, so best advise is to use popular p2p protocols like bit torrent with a proxy thats on a priority port

Telkom Internet & Axxess internet are the same things so that wont make a difference. All P2P programs are P2P(duh) so they are all shaped. You should still get reasonable speeds though

uh thats not how it works actually, they cant just tell some magical computer to shape all p2p traffic and then it does. They either inspect each packet against packet rules on an intelligent firewall, or they shape with port number rules.

SO the rule will say for example if traffic looks like X then its probably a torrent, if its a torrent then do Y

OR

if traffic is from port X then its not priority traffic so shape it

so in the first case to get around it you could actually use an obscure protocol that the firewall doesnt have rules for, BUT in this case you have both rules, so technically if he found an obscure p2p app/protocol that the firewall doesnt have rules for and if it ran on a priority port, then it would work well.

but in reality the obscure p2p apps/protocols dont have alot of content on them so its better to use something like a proxy for popular protocols rather than looking for unpopular ones

but im saying not all p2p is shaped, just the ones worth using, by the packet shaper anyway

thanx 4 all the help, I am still unsure tho. Right now I am using limewire & it works pretty well 4 what I want (music & movies) so how can I use that or another p2p prog (please give me an example of one) to get full speed.
If there is no way to get that then approx. wat speed will I get when using something like Limewire with Telkom adsl 512?
Thank you,
Shiraz

razer check out our freeproxy solution. Everyone max out their adsl line with most if not all p2p, atleast the max available speed is sustainable ;)

Clipse what is your total subscribers using the "free" proxy now??

Razer to answer your question.
If you want to download at your lines capacity locally there are two places you can use almost always at full speed ,but they never have the stuff ur looking for.

If you want to use your line to access international torrents there are a few sites you can use, but trust me if you are on a normal shaped SAIX account yoy will not get the speeds that ur line are fully capable off.

By this I mean you have an 384k line and you are dl @ 20-30k. With ur line speed you should be getting between 30k and 50k dl speeds depending on how many people are seeding the particular torrent and the swarm size of the said torrent.

The most easiest sulotion to this is to get a proxy server to handle the shaped packets you are downloading. Using a service like this either free or not will give you the best results.

Happy leetching.

guys we have to get a sticky thread for edonkey

download edonkey set your upload to 5 and download to 20

2005-03 8.89 GB 21.46 GB 30.35 GB
2005-04 3.69 GB 26.10 GB 29.79 GB
2005-05 4.36 GB 25.57 GB 29.93 GB
2005-06 4.96 GB 23.72 GB 28.68 GB
2005-07 5.59 GB 22.14 GB 27.73 GB
2005-08 9.04 GB 25.75 GB 34.79 GB
2005-09 4.61 GB 8.64 GB 13.25 GB
Total 41.15 GB 153.38 GB 194.53 GB

those are my stats since gettiun my 30 gig account with all youcaneat

i use around 5 gigs a month for surfing email bf 2 the rest is edonkey

Thanx 4 all the help
Killadoob, edonkey looks good but erm, what do those stats mean??
Clipse, I am looking at that free proxy and I will try it out as soon as I get my dsl line (I'm still waiting for telkom)
Wisecrack, are you saying that I will get 30 KB/s - 50 KB/s with 512 using any p2p (eg: limewire) or will I only get those speeds on specific torrents? (and if so, could you give me a web address?)
Thank you all,
Shiraz

raZer, I get full speeds (55k down) with both eDonkey and Torrents. All I do is use a port that is not shaped. I also limit eDonkey to 1k upload because here in SA I can't afford to upload. Torrents I limit to 3K up. With torrents just make sure that the amount of seeders is good.

Ooh that sounds good, is there a site where I can see which ports are not shaped by telkominternet & axxes africa? That'll help a lot.
Thanx,
Shiraz

I use one of the following ports and all seem to work fine 20,21,22(Current eDonkey Port),23(Current Torrent Port),80. These are the ports I use.

ok, but if another program is using that port (eg: if IE is using port 80 & eDonkey is using it) will it still work fine?

I can't remember but I have not used port 80 in a very long time. Use 22 and 23 they work well.

ok, thank you. It seems that you have solved my problem!
I will try this out as soon (ha ha) as Telkom gives me my dsl line

I dunno. I don't find the shaping to be any problem at all. I use Bittorrent all the time.
Using bittorrent on a 1Mb/s DSL line on port 7881. Screenshot here: http://rodent.za.net/files/1mbdsltorrent.gif
The screenshot shows two downloads at 81.2kB/s and 14.2kB/s for a total of 95.4kB/s which is almost the peak of DSL1024.

Just don't run your client on a standard port.

Razer, u can use the same port used by another app at the same time without problems. Like port 80 as the example u gave, u can use it for edonkey if u like without any ill effect on ur side.
As long as the port u choose makes it through the proxy server (if ur connection is being put through one), then all is well.

For the last week, following the SAIX peering interruptions, my edonkey has been crippled....I only get some downloading at night...during daytime I get no download speed at all. I have tried different port numbers and all show this "on at night, off during the day" behaviour for edonkey.
If anyone has suggestions on how to remedy this I would be glad to hear it.

Cheers
