We are currently running Neotel due to the non existence of Telkom in the area but would like to get a small PABX up and running in the office to handle line hunting, call waiting etc.

Is it possible at all with Neotel and the devices that they offer to get an analog line output to a PABX or would we be better served going the VOIP route with our WISP?

Hi

I would suggest the whole VOIP route. You can install your own pbx sever and have full controll of it. Then only use Neotel as your sip trunk. I would think that is the simpler option. Its what we do.

Thanks for that, not really looking for the hassle of having a PBX server to babysit but going VOIP will probably be best.

I see our WISP offers managed units for not too much money. Will give them a shout and see what happens.

There are a few ways to do this. Depending on the Neotel service you have they can enable SIP for you as well. You will have to setup a SIP enabled PBX to connect to it. You will then link your phones to the PBX. The SIP provider can however be anyone really.

Other option is to go with a hosted PBX. PBX is hosted and managed by a provider and you simply configure your phones to connect to it.

If you have a really small setup you can even just setup phones to connect directly to a SIP provider, but then you won't necessarily have an easy time with transfers and other PBX functions.

The key to this solution will be your internet connectivity quality. First prize is a dedicated line or portion of line towards voice. If you mix voice and data without decent QoS you're going to get into trouble.

If you want more info drop me a PM and we can see if we can assist.

We currently run a number of PBXes over Neotel with very good results. They also offer an SLA on some of their business services and give you good guarantees on quality. If you would like one of our guys in Johannesburg to pop around and take a look at your setup feel free to PM your details.

Richard

I was with Neotel people the other day and they will soon start offering "Hosted PBX"... That's the way to go... You will have a full Voip system on premises with the option to connect your SIP devices/apps over the internet.

You can work from home or from wherever you are, as long you have a semi decent internet connection.

Many other companies offer this service already, but from Neotel you can expect a service that 'should' never fail. (at least from my broadband experience with Neotel... In the last 4 years that I've been using them... only one failure... 10 minutes downtime).

Neotel 12 SIP channels added to your Fiber or Microwave link (R500 line rental bargain). Siemens OpenScape PABX (www.unify.com) is excellent or go with the hosted PABX solution if you don't want to manage another piece of hardware on site.

Hardware PBXs? They are expensive, non-scalable, require maintenance/backup power/security like any on site equipment and the list goes on. Did I say they are expensive?

Also VOIP over wireless (standard wireless) can give problems if the provider doesn't know what they are doing. So do thorough research into one before making the jump.
