Pace 921VNX Connection-specific DNS suffix

I'm having some trouble changing the DNS on my Pace router, maybe someone can help..

I've changed the DNS via putty, reset the router, etc.. Nothing seems to work, and I've tried plenty of times (even after factory resets..) Unfortunately it just doesn't work for me. In the router interface, it shows DNS as "user defined" and lists the DNS settings (Unotelly) that I put in. However it doesn't seem to make use of them. Netflix/Hulu/etc all still identify my location as SA, and Unotelly still tells me that I need to setup my DNS..

I even set the DNS suffix blank, as per the link in this thread..

Now I would settle for just changing the DNS setting on a device basis, but I don't think that is possible with the chromecast (which is my main device when it comes to making use of Unotelly).

i sold mine. that pace is total @#$$#@#@

my stats dropped from a solid 10mb/s to 5mb/s and my line could not even sync properly.
will never by a telkom router in my lifetime.
you cannot even enter dns settings properly.

Anyone?

I've tried changing my DNS settings at a device level, which works.. Again, this isn't possible to do with a chromecast, so I need to be able to do it on the router..

Not possible to do it on the PACE, i had the same issue I took mine back the same day to telkom and got my money back I am now running a Zyxel that Vox recommends great piece of hardware and cheaper than the PACE you can get it at Matrix for under a 1000 rand. cut your losses and move I am afraid to say

Same thing happened to me with this modem
 
Ok, for reasons far beyond my understanding, it finally decided to work!

Great! Now does anyone know how to setup a static route on this thing (presumably through putty)?..

This pace piece of kaka is really a feacel squirter.
 
Hi Kayos,

In theory you should be able to set pretty much anything in Putty using the same method for the DNS prefix and static DNS.

To get a list of all the settings ('folders') on the PACE, enable logging in Putty (Logging / All Session Output) , logon to the router and type 'ls<enter>' at the command prompt.

Open the log file and find the necessary settings you are looking for.

Which settings and what values to set them to are another story altogether though, and I can't help you there sorry, though Layer3Forwarding_Forwarding looks promising. It seems there are already four routes setup for VPN and other services on the modem, but this is really not my area of expertise.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge of routing might have a suggestion of what to add / modify given this?

It's amazing you guys would go through all these steps to get something working on the pace router. It's not worth it, just get yourself a router with all these settings pre configured.

It's funny.. I had a ZyXEL router which I returned because I found the Pace to be a more stable with my line. I constantly had an orange light on the ZyXEL router (DSL connection light) but, as it turned out, there was actually a fault on my line from Telkom's side.

Now it looks like I'm going to be returning to the store to re-purchase my returned ZyXEL.

I bought the tp link yesterday and I can tell its rock solid so far. I am about 150m away from my exchange so the lantic chipset from the tp link router comes in handy.
 
The geek factor? :D Sometimes we just like to find out how some of these things work.

Hi Kayoss,

Also, before you start fiddling around with Putty, see if you can get what you need from the Pace by selecting [Custom] from the firewall configuration and adding a Firewall Rule at the bottom? This might achieve what you are looking for.

do you have a link to the firmware you used?

Have been reading the user manual for the 9980 and it seems to have none of the limitations of the Pace.

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated.. but for the life of me, I cannot figure it out. Will just have to go buy another router.

If I am not mistaken the Orange light means that you have VSDL connection, I have mine running at home and it when from GREEN when on ADSL2+ to Orange when my profile went to VDSL profile

I find that the Zyxel is very stable have had no issues with it

very happy was easy to set up and get my DNS and Static routing set up with in 15 mins and have been streaming with out any issues.
