I just had the strangest issue I've ever had with my router (VDSL 20mb, Afrihost capped). Out of nowhere, my Xbox logged itself out, and when I tried googling for information, I found I couldn't browse at all.
I ran some tests, and found out that while I could ping and tracert to the destinations, the hostnames weren't resolving. So I tried changing the DNS servers in my Pace router, and I couldn't find the option anywhere. Then I edited my network config on my machine, trying IS, OpenDNS, and Google's 8.8.8.8 - nothing worked.
On a hunch, I tried browsing a few IP addresses directly - and they all connected normally.
Then it got stranger. I used PsPing to test outbound port connectivity. I could reach all of those DNS servers on ports 53, 80, and 443. But if I used nslookup in interactive mode, every DNS query failed with a timeout. How on EARTH does a DNS query timeout when you're able to both ping, and successfully connect on port 53?
Eventually I rebooted the router, and that seemed to solve the problem. How or why my router suddenly decided to timeout DNS queries to 3 separate servers is beyond me. Has anyone else experienced this before?
