Pace HD PVR 2 is always on!

Putting a HDPVR in standby makes no difference at all, except that it becomes a clock
When in standby it will still record & download data as I mentioned, the HDD doesn't really get a break

Remember reading this some time ago:

"In fact most LNBs are kept powered because this helps to stabilise the temperature and, thereby, the local oscillator frequency by the dissipated heat from the circuitry of LNB."

Not sure how accurate/true it is, but MAYBE another reason it never is really on standby.

Sounds like BS... I've never noticed any improvement in the performance of an LNB, after it has been on for a while.

I'm no expert on LNBs, but I do have experience at trying to hand-off bugs you couldn't fix as features. This has that same aroma.

I think it refers to the longevity of the LNB and not performance. I know very little about LNBs so it might be BS. :)

Longevity? Nope... I do know a bit about them. They normally last until the plastic gets brittle, cracks and water gets in.

What about regions with extreme temperature fluctuations? Cold European regions compared to our fairly warm temps. ;)

Wish Multichoice would start making better hardware with proper and efficient cooling.

these STBs are designed to stay on all the time (for background sw dl, catchup, on-demand services).
That's no excuse. A modern LCD will use as little as 0.3W in standby while doing the same. Just add a few W for a powered hard disk if it has PVR capabilities.

So if the HDD spins regardless, how long can it be expected to last?

TV doesn't have a constantly operating hard drive, fan or sat receiver.

About 20W for a HDPVR2P according to my Eskom Eddi meter. That amounts to about R15 a month at Eskom's highest kWh charge.

Still a pointless thread.

Why? Just because I'm not impressed with DSTV's crap hardware?

Why can't we expect the HD PVR 2 to use some proper power saving and power down the hard drive when I switch the decoder off?

Not sure the make of the hard drive, but, to give you an idea.....the MTBF for Western Digital's Velociraptor & Red hard drives are 1 million hours.
