Packet Loss, horrible support @Afrihost

Howsit guys,

I'm struggling with packet loss on my home connection.

I have a 8mbps uncapped line with Afrihost and they also manage the line.

At the moment I have 3 cmd windows open, all 3 pinging different locations. 1 to www.google.co.za 2 to www.google.com and 3 to my server at work.

So I get packet loss on all 3 windows, thing is, the packet loss does not happen at the same time on the cmd windows

1 would drop a packet while both 2 and 3 stay fine, then later 2 would drop a packet while the other 2 stay fine.

I can really notice this when I'm playing games (CSGO) as it creates lag spikes, for normal browsing it doesn't cause too much of an issue.

I have checked line stats from Afrihost and it all clears out, I've also tried 2 other ISP accounts and get the same problem.

According to me, it has to be something with the physical line, I've had techs out from Telkom twice already but they don't really do much, just check normal stats like attenuation and line noise and then they're done which is BS.

I don't have a spare router otherwise I would try that also.

What do you guys think the problem can be? It's been going like this for about a month and the support from Afrihost has been horrible, next level horrible, definitely going to leave them soon.

Thanks

If it's a Telkom problem then why are you blaming Afrihost? There's really not much they can do from their side. You're going to have the same problem no matter which ISP you use.

Check your filter maybe swap it with another if you have, check there's no other devices using the same phone line.
swap out your phone / adsl cables for new.
just basically eliminate by trial and error.

@Dewey, please do yourself a favor and read through my post again, once done, please show me where I blame Afrihost. I will quote from my first post the only sentence related to Afrihost :
"...and the support from Afrihost has been horrible, next level horrible, definitely going to leave them soon."

Clearly, I mention that the support is horrible, I do not blame them for this and mention throughout the post that I think the cause is the physical line itself.

I can also show you how many days go by without any feedback from them, and once I receive feedback, it's them asking me to do a couple of tracerts and pings which I have sent them extensive details on when I logged the ticket. This happens time and again. Also, I do pay them a fee to manage my internet line, a part of the management would certainly be sorting issues like this out would it not?

@Drake, thanks, I've switched out all the cables, swapped and completely removed the filter with no luck. I'll try and borrow a router for further testing

Seems like every one with a problem on AH is making a new thread about it instead of posting in the official AH thread.

Well they got users who complained removed from that thread if I remember.

Only because they were attacking the Afri guys, which is not on at all.
Lol. Any one would be pissed off if AH kept asking users to keep supplying information instead of actually fixing things.

Just because a majority weren't affected at the time it was all good, now the **** hit the fan.

Honestly why would my account differ to someone else's if they are both business uncapped and in the same region?

Surely if he was having issues I would too?

Yeah test your router is the next thing to check, has Telkom tried resetting the line their side?

They ask your account to double check it is correctly packaged and profiled

Everyone seems to miss the entire point of this thread??

As stated above, my problem lies with the line itself. I DO NOT BLAME THIS ON AH. I do however complain regarding the **** support I receive.

I mean, I'm not even coming back to this thread as everyone is just here to either bash on me for "blaming" AH or here to defend them.

Thanks to everyone who actually made meaningful additions, peace out

I guess we're on the same exchange then. Has taken Telkom since the 20th of September until this past Friday to figure out it's not at my home. Their technicians picked up packet loss at the exchange on every different number they tested.

This morning, the muppets(not the same ones who found the fault at the exchange) that were supposed to fix that, said they can't find anything wrong, and they called me again to tell me as much.

Bottom line - don't expect it to be resolved soon. I've been on their case for 3 weeks now.

Aww shame, but it makes them feel good about themselves.

have you tried ping plotter?

run a few pings.

one to your PC.
one to your router.
one to another device on the network.
one to your ISP
one to a local south african IP, not on your ISP.
one to a international IP

remember pinging websites or DNS servers will give you packet loss sometimes, they are not prioritized to respond to ping first. if they are busy, they will drop the icmp for higher priority data.

and you need to try with a spare router to test, so make a plan.

also, how do you connect to your router, wifi or cable?

If it's the same issue as mine (could be since he's also in Centurion), it's definitely on Telkom's side, as they've confirmed already. I've done hundreds of tests already, and they found packet loss on every number they tried on the exchange.

Also came here to say exactly the above.

+1 for PingPlotter
-1000 for WIFI connections. Test using an Ethernet fly lead connected directly to your router.
