Hi.

Can someone please explain to me, what exactly packet loss is? And how would I go about fixing it?

I have a 4meg uncapped account with telkom and im using a D-link 2750u router. Also, is it possible that my router could cause packet loss?

When you send a data over a link/line, the network cards on each side break the big data up in small even pieces, number each piece and add error checking data to each piece. Then this pieces of data gets transmitted over the link, and re-assembled on the other side to create the original piece of data, like a video, word doc, or what ever. Those pieces of data with tracking info are called packets.

In the process of sending these packets, one or ten can get lost, and then due to the error checking etc, that packet get re-requested, and so on till all packets have been sent.

So if the packets get lost, there is your packet loss.

In some cases even with retrying to sent packets, it would give up if the losses are too big.

There are many factors causing packet loss, and in most cases it's the medium like adsl, 3g or wifi that has a bad connection, interference, or faulty cables. The network cards, or modems, can also be faulty, like lightning can damage the router's port, and generate errors as it transmit.

In your case we can interogate the actual dsl line, then test the router, and make sure everything work as it suppose too.

So how do i do that? Should i try changing the ethernet port where my network cable from my pc is plugged into? Or should i maybe just try my friends router out to see if it improves?

What is the main problem?
What do you experience that you ask these questions, and then we tacle that

The main problem is with online gaming. On battlefield 4 at the top right hand corner theres an icon that is almost always on or flickering, so i went through the previous patch notes of the game and saw that they added in two icons notifying you if youre lagging or experiencing packet loss. The icon that says youre lagging is almost never on, its just the packet loss icon thats on or either flickering. Another thing i noticed is when i reboot my router the problem seems to go away for a few hours and then it just starts all over again untill i reboot my router.

Also, and i dont know if this is connected to my packet loss problem, its impossible for me to watch a video in 720p on youtube, when i switch to 460p it buffers every 15 to 20 seconds. My friend has exactly the same account as me and he streams in 720p without any hassles, and he has 0% packet loss

I've got exactly the same problem. This has been going on for about 6 weeks now and haven't gotten to bottom of the problem with either Telkom or my ISP. At the moment I have constant connection drops and massive packet loss just before a disconnect. I then restart my router only for it happen all over again 5 mins later. My line speed also degrades to the point where I can't even open Google search.

I play BF4 competitively and right now that's not happening because either the packet loss gets so bad I can't move or my connection just drops and I'm off the server. I can certainly relate to your frustrations Charl.

I just wish i knew how to fix this. Ive changed my DNS settings to 8.8.8./8.8.4.4 and it made no diffrence, I ran a trace route to MyBB and my exchange is not congested, my SnR and attenuation rates are fine so what is there to do next? Buy a new router?

Its super k@k playing any game online at present, even streaming on youtube is horrible.

I am also having this problem I think its becoming less of hardware issue and more of a Battlefield is still bit broken problem.

What are your tags btw?

I doubt its a battlefield issue, because like i said my friends game is smooth, no problems and 0% packet loss, none of those icons pop up during a match. And battlefield is not the only online game im experiencing this.

I just want to add my experience here with D-Link and packet loss on games, in my case an old game like UT99..
I always used an old Billion Router/modem and never had any problems, then lightning hit.. well you can guess what happened.
As we have no Billion suppliers in PMBurg I was forced to buy a D-Link 2750u router/modem... (came highly recommended)
What a load of utter junk and the misfortunes I had that followed....
The packet loss and gaming was atrocious to say the least...
This friggin router saw my adsl line (which is only 80 meters from that DSLAM) as very poor and said my attenuation and snr was out of specification so it disconnected me at least every hour, not to mention the pings that went thru the roof :(
Gaming was a sorry state of affairs.
Telkom came out to the house (thanks to TelkomZA) and found this modem to be the problem and I got myself another make of modem/router (Netgear N150 in this case (as the N300 is also a load of u know what)) and the problem totally disappeared.
That was about 6 months ago, and to this day, total happiness to the body :)

Hye Charl

did your connection ever come right... in the last month or so my battlefield connection went from bad to "i just want to sell this #$%^& playstation"

playing on PS4, i get issues like this...

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...nformation?p=16425233&viewfull=1#post16425233

granted these tests were done with the wifi on my phone... but the PS4 is using lan cable to ADSL router... it's the telkom Huawei router... got it with 2 yr contract telkom ADSL all in one bundle.. 2 mb uncapped.

i logged a call with tlekom, and guy tells me that if they come out then they going to charge me if nothing wrong with the line.
i asked how much is the charge and he said he does not know !! WTH... that like givign them a blank cheque...

just lat night... again just one bar... press button to drop healthpack... then only a second later (literally a second) it drops... by that time i'm dead !!!

arrrggghhh , i thought playing BF3 on 3g connection was bad... eish this ADSL is worse...
