Pages keep "timing out"

Well I use the OpenDNS settings of 208.67.220.220 (out of my head, I think its right) without any problems.

I do notice page lookups are faster, especially international where it makes more difference.

Instructions as per the Open DNS site...

Troubleshooting

If you see the Oops page, please try two more tests, in case the Welcome page was improperly cached.

First, visit our demonstration site internetbadguys.com. If you were successful in switching to OpenDNS, it should be blocked as a phishing site. Otherwise, it will tell you that it's a demonstration site.
Second, make a deliberate typo in the TLD, like craigslist.og and see if it resolves to craigslist.org. If you are using OpenDNS, you will be taken to the classifieds site. If you are not, you will get your default browser error page.

Still not working?

You may need to restart your web browser and/or router. Bummer, we know.

Please let us know if you're still running into problems.

I contacted OpenDNS about the problem. I'll have to wait for a reply - which probably won't arrive today. One more question. The DNS settings are now typed into my connection anyway. Should I change it back to the default or should I leave it there?

Get arial - but I have one

Hi Guys

Just ran UtTracestar and the best signal I get is -91 on Northcliff. All the other towers suggest getting a arial or giving up, two suggest that a arial won't even work.
I manage to get these results with the omni directional arial installed. Do I try and move the arial or do I return the modem

Northcliff is not the best tower to be on right now. It's one of the most congested ones in JHB. Try adjusting your antenna to achieve the best possible signal. How far away are you from the tower? (In Km)

Then your signal is realistic, since you are so far away from the tower. All you can do now is find your modem's "sweet spot" and adjust your antenna for optimal performance. It's best to mount an omni antenna to your roof.

Omni Antenna

The problem is I already have a OMNI ANTENNA mounted to the roof, If I emoved the antenna I can't log in at all:confused:

Okay your problem is unfortunately more the tower (Northcliff is notoriously the worst in SA I think) than the signal. So I dont know if bothering to improve the signal will help.

The fact that you live far away from the worst tower make it really bad... I'm not sure it you should keep the connection if it currently isnt performing well.

You can check if iBurst are going to put up a new tower close to you. they might be doing this as Northcliff is very over subscribed now.

Same as above, I just now got a reply from opendns but they just said to try the tests I had done already.

It looks like your ISP, iBurst, might be overriding your DNS settings. Can you verify with them that they support third-party DNS servers?

Anyone?

Come on.... overriding the settings? EHV uses IBurst and he got the Open DNS working. I think they're trying to pull a fast one here.

As I said before...

Remove the DNS settings from the PPPoE NIC and reset it to automatic. Then on the virtual NIC (USB LAN connection) set primary DNS to 208.67.220.220 and the secondary as 208.67.222.222.

Shut down your browser and any other application that is making use of your internet connection, then run a repair on you’re LAN NIC or if you don't know how to do this run this command; cmd.exe /C "ipconfig /flushdns"

Tried it just now, exactly what the OpenDNS techie said I should do. To no avail, it still isn't working. As I said my LAN isn't enabled. It's connected but there is no ethernet cable running from my comp to my modem.

I have to work from home quite often but I still like to know what signal I am getting so I need to change my IP setup on my laptop from the work settings whenever I get home. So that utTraceStar will work, so what I have done is setup 2 batch file to automate things for me . So to configure you nic to work with utTraceStar run the following

netsh interface ip set Address NIC static 192.168.250.1 255.255.255.0

To configure DNS run this

netsh interface ip set dns NIC static 208.67.220.220
netsh interface ip add dns NIC 208.67.222.222 index=2

TO return things to DHCP

netsh interface ip set address DHCP

Please take note for my own easy of use I have renamed the default "Local Area Connection #" to NIC , you will see in the netsh commands I use NIC in evey command, also the DNS IP's can be substitued for which everone's you choose , also remember to use the closest one to you as the primary ( first command )

to find out what your network interfaces are type the following

netsh interface show interface

hope I have helped someone and not confused to many ppl

Strange, because I have a Netgear router too, and it worked fine first time. www.internetbadguys.com brings up the phishing warning that it is supposed to and all.

Just a thought, maby this only works in Cape town for some reason? I wouldn't really know why.. but its only CPT guys who have got it to work so far. And remember that all JHB guys couldn't get Rapidshare.de to work because of the transparent proxy or whatever, seems like something up there might be blocking this too.
