I need help with this problem, please:

Whenever I load any page that is fairly large (this rarely happens on smaller pages), or if I download a largeish file over HTTP - for example, a page with a flash animation on it (doesn't happen on p2p or FTP as far as I know), the page doesnt always completely load. Instead, it seems to give up halfway through, leaving me with a half loaded page and 'done'. Some pages require me to reload them 5 or 6 times just to get them loaded fully. As you can imagine this is really irritating.

This happens on both a Windows XP computer and a Mac OS X computer. Both connect to a Gigabyte 802.11b wireless router, which connects to the MW modem over PPPoE. I've tried changing MTU values on the router and on the computers to 1492, 1500, 1452, and 576 and the problem doesn't go away.

I doubt this is a problem with the MyWireless service, for some reason everything points to my own little wireless hotspot. What's wrong? How do I fix it?

I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me fix this really annoying problem.

change isp's

seriously though ... this is often the fault of your good friends with their trasparent proxy ... Do yourself a favour and try loading the same page via PSTN connection ... if it works you know where to look. If it does not, post here and lets see where the community can assist.

Try here
http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
Tweaking may fix
Slow download speeds
Download slower than upload speed
Skipping in TCP streaming video/audio
Blank web pages
Connection issues to some sites

then try

and then download this:

if no luck at this point, grab a beer...

Thanks guys. So far, I've ruled out the router as being the problem - does the same thing when I connect the modem directly to my mac. I'll post back once I have tried your suggestions above. Thanks!

Don, I've experienced this on an incorrectly setup squid proxy. It may be Sentech's transparent proxy as regardtv pointed out.

Hmmm this appears now to be a common problem on the Sentech network, that they are allegedly working on. *rolls eyes*.

Don I have had that... especially with flash... where it would load and then kinda give up... weird that...

one of the countless reasons why I cancelled Sucktech

I also seem to be having that problem lately. I'm pretty sure it's a Sentech problem. I remember I used to have that same problem on MWeb some years ago. I think they just don't have enough BW ... my international is also sitting at around 2KB/s lately.

This problem has been confirmed with a number of other people. I'm glad it's not me... but I'm not glad that it's Sentech. AGAIN.

well I feel like a righteous dick.

I found out via the iBurst forum that they are capping their service to 3GB and I have cancelled Sentech... hrmmm...

We need an internetless thread on this forum... where users will post their posts via snail mail and rpm can type them out in his spare time (fun)

owell DO you think I can retract my cancellation... it was only said they would cancel it by Friday...

****it... you see what impulsive behavour leads to kids...

I was told today that Sentech are placing sub nodes in nodes which should help with latency and speed... and they have bought bandwidth from BT...

makes ya wander if they are not committed to egtting this going.

anyways
I am back on sentech... yup
cancelled my cancellation if that makes sense...

iBusrt is a load of ****.... R700.00 for a 3Gb capped service... and they cant even guarentee speeds
so whoever told me iBuirst is **** they were right ...

Atleast with Sentech they have decent caps... even though they are not meant to have caps

yup

If you look at the offerings ADSL is a rip off and so is iBurst
I mainly need it for Local and Sentech is quick
They are working on international speeds but doubt will coe right but still they are trying
iBurst will be R700.00 for what? Another ADSL but where local is also capped? Sod That.

Atleast with multithreading I get decent Sentech Speeds on International and I will rather just patiently wait
until someone in this country wakes up and provides boradband at good prices... till then Sentech is the best outta of a bad bunch

please elaborate a little on this info, how reliable is it, when will it take place.
my browsing is in desparate need of some magic fix!
I've just about lost all faith in sentehc, but theres no SAFE alternative at the moment, as you've said, iBurst marketing department has a lot to learn about user demands, and i still wouldn't sign up with them until 6 months after official launch.

Last week Wednesday I had a meeting with Winston Smith. He came to my house so I could personally show him my broadband connection. We had an interesting discussion and he explained to me pretty much what Sentech had done in the past and the mistakes they had made. He also explained to me what they are doing now to rectify the situation.

It was all very intersting but my main objective was to find out when will international bandwidth be resolved. I explained to him that some users have reported to get good speeds so why is it some users are getting bad speeds and others good speeds. In short what the hell is going on.

He was kind enough to fill me in on what his plan of action was for me. I have yet to recieve a phone call or email copmmunication from him. He said by the end of this week.

By Wednesday I was hacked off in general because I had heard nothing. I phoned Michelle Potgieter who was gracious enough to give me the name and number of whom I must phone to cancel. The top person at Sentech Customer Support (an interesting person I might add).

I phoned a Mr Theron. It was Mr Theron who firstly explained to me the measures Sentech are taking to rectify International Bandiwdth. He said to me in non technical terms that Sentech are aware of what they call Rouge Towers. Woodmead (60) happens to be one of these. He explained it could possibly be the dense area of companies that could be effecting the performance on My Wireless for that tower. (ie lots of people on MW using that particular tower). Winston in our Wednesday meeting confimed the same thing by saying they are 'investigating' tower 60. Mr Theron informed me that they are taking several measures and one of these measures were sub nodes for current nodes. He also explaine to me that they had overlooked uplink traffic and were investigating wether congested uplinks would cause bad downlinks.

Anyway... I asked Mr Theron if I could cancel MW and if their would be any 'hidden' charges for cancelling. He explained that in my situation he would cancel by this Friday. I went home after work and discovered iBurst truth... decided to retract my cancellation... and that has been my history with Sentech.

I had caused alot of grief at Sentech and apparently my mails had made it to Mr Theron's desk before I had phoned him and he claims he was going to phone me. All that aside why am I still on Sentech? I am still on Sentech not neccessarily because of these new details I have discovered... but purely because I investigated my options.

I WILL NOT support Telkom.
iBurst must be dreaming thinking they can give people a service that is not even comparable to Telkom ADSL.
Sentech seem to be aware of the problem and seem to be rectifying it.

I do not know if what I was told was the truth or something to please me. I dont think they would lie to me or make up stories. I beleive they are making a true effort in resolving this problem. They would have let me cancel with no extra charges... I am choosing to stay with Sentech...

I am not clued with Netoworks and did not ask Mr Theron to explain what he said I am simply repeating what he said so I can not elaborate on what he meant. Fact is I have spoken to key people at Sentech and they seem to be trying to resolve the problem.

Dont bother phoning or emailing Michelle as she deals with marketing. Winston was fine but is a busy person and I think he has bigger things to worry about then one moaning user... I still hope he contacts me. Mr Theron was superb...

er.. okay auto post then... wasnt finished...

The above has been my own little 'war' with Sentech and I have decided I have waisted enough time with them... They are aware of slow speeds... THey are not stupid people... they will try and rectify it... But to be honest with you... my MAIN question was this:

When will international bandwidth be rectified and how?

This question has never been answered. They apparently have bought more bandwidth from BT... a partner in UK. My international speeds are sub standard. Speeds should be better but to be honest.,.. I am tired.

I am tired of the speed tests... the half truths... the waiting... I am just gonna use this service until my contract ends... when it ends I will see what options there are then... Who knows... maybe Sentech would have rectified the problem... or maybe they wont exist...

Sub nodes, uplink investigation, more bandwidth. That is how they plan to fix it. When? The band width has been bought... thats all I know.

Someone elses turn to do some digging.

Sentech has only ever made false promises, repeatedly. There is no longer any basis to deal with them in good faith. They maybe aware of the slow speeds, but they don't care and frankly they really do seem quite stupid. And arrogant.

No really, they must be incredibly stupid - the sordid history of their incompetence bears testament to this. They were stupid enough to leave their transparent proxy wide open for months, they were stupid enough to publicly blame their users for the resulting bandwidth shortage, they were stupid enough to email their customers' details to everyone, they are stupid enough to believe that "sharing" a 128k connection means you should only ever get 128kbps divided by 30 bandwidth, they are stupid enough to think that anyone will actually indefinitely pay R850pm for the 256k package with an effective 4kBps international connection, they are so stupid that they just didn't bill half their subscribers for a month, they are so utterly thick that they advertised an "unlimited" connection but then had to enforce a cap and they are dumb enough to offer a 256k package that runs slower than the 128k package and not do anything about it.

How can you not think these people are stupid? They are the village idiots of the IT community and we are the only few left of their dwindling subscriber base. I must have an internet connection so I am only tolerating (barely) this garbage until I get something else in place. It's over for Sentech, they're history. Haven't you noticed how few posts there are on this forum these days? Do you think that's because everyone is happy? More likely everyone's left or given up.

Sentech has moved on to other things - they're going to be a cellular operator next year, so they're probably frantically planning how best to become the country's worst cellular provider instead - that way they can screw over a much bigger market.

Oh, and if Winston believes "rogue" towers with too many companies on them is causing the bandwidth problem at 1:00am in the morning, please ask him to show us where all these busy offices are at this hour of the day. It's been observed that sentech speed actually improves in the midmorning hours - that's peak business use time so I think it is clear from what he said that they have no clue what is going on, or they're just being dishonest - speculating about "rogue" towers and uplink traffic interfering with download speed makes it abundantly clear that they are as much in the dark as we are. It's never really been possible to upload at any decent speed on sentech anyway and the "rogue" tower yarn is obviously designed to make you think it is localised and not symptomatic of their entire network.
