I've configured a DSL (PPPoE) connection in a new installations of Ubuntu 9.04. It connects to the (old) Desktop Modem via ethernet. It says it's connected. If I call up an URL I can see the DNS lookup is working. The header in the Firefox tab changes - it will even show the site icon. But the page does not load. It just says "waiting for" whichever site I try. I have set the MTU to 1352.

Does anyone have any idea why it is not working? The modem works just fine when connected to my Vista laptop.

Capped? Normally that thing with me and my Ubuntu, its either capped or network uppedstuff.

Push the MTU up to 1392.

Try forcing the DNS address's.

Johannesburg (Pretoria, Bloemfontein, PE, North West, Nelspruit, Polokwane):
Primary: 196.2.97.234
Secondary: 196.46.70.10
Third: 41.208.247.5

Cape Town:
Primary: 196.46.70.10
Secondary: 196.2.97.234
Third: 41.208.247.5

Durban (and Pietermaritzburg):
Primary: 41.208.247.5
Secondary: 196.46.70.10
Third: 196.2.97.234

Let us know how it goes.

i remember 2-3 years ago having to activate pppoe manually in ubuntu.
You can do this by going to a terminal and typing "pon dsl-provider". Might have to "sudo pon dsl-provider" that, cant remember.

Also, ping google (74.125.45.100)or you can even throw that ip into firefox to show if its a ****ty iburst dns problem or an ubuntu problem.

I doubt that its you being capped as Linux has a way better/faster Tcp/IP stack and implementation(or so i've heard).

Although the capped speed has reached an all time low *cough* *cough*

Thanks for all the suggestions - I'll let you know how it goes.

Still no joy - it is definitely connecting fine. I have an ip address in 41.208.*.* range. It gives me the correct DNS server ip addresses, so it is not an a DNS issue. Firefox is just not displaying any pages. It did manage to show a tiny bit of the iburst.co.za page; just the text links, no graphics. Weird.

It seems that setting the MTU via System>Preferences>Network Connections does not actually work. When I set MTU to 1392 using ifconfig everything works fine. Go figure.
