I have always had a good word for Telkom I never got on the ranting high horse

UNTIL NOW ! :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

It seems with Telkom -- Plus ça change, plus c'est la même

WARNING: This is a long dreary depressing post ( even worse than SONA 2017 )

We have had ADSL with Telkom just about from forever

SO
We wanted to downgrade our Telkom ADSL package
Keep the line with Telkom 2Mb ADSL
Lose the 20GB softcap ( much too expensive )
Keep the email account ( had it for too long to attached to change )

OK
Sunday morning go to the Telkom direct shop at the mall at 08h45
Wait in the line
Speak to consultant who does the jiggery-pokery on his terminal
Half an hour later he informs us that there is an error and he cannot proceed and we must phone the support line
Tuesday ( life goes on ) phone support line WAIT WAIT WAIT -- speak to lady explain what is wanted
WAIT some more -- has to consult with supervisor
OK .........BUT Have to completely delete old account WTF ???????
Old account deleted new account created with the same email address ( Insisted on this )
PROBLEMS PROBLEMS PROBLEMS system is not responding -- will phone you back tomorrow morning
Of course you know what happens now -- NO-ONE PHONES BACK !
Thursday phone support number again -- WAIT WAIT WAIT -- another consultant tackles the problem
OK -- old account deleted -- new account created with same mail address HOORAY ( job reference number given )
Username and password details sent to mobile

Come to set up new account on router
HHhmm not connecting ???
Try the online password changer and get sent a code to the mobile
Insert code and proceed to change password ( can only find the one for the mail account ??? )
Password is accepted -- click on submit whoa ERROR ERROR ERROR WTF password cannot be changed

Phone support number again -- speak to another consultant -- this consultant says NO RECORD of previous job reference number !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tells me to phone back and this time speak to technical section
Another call this time to technical section WAIT WAIT WAIT -- I now have ANOTHER job reference number
AGAIN it actually means NOTHING as this "technical" consultant wants to refer me to some other section ( Sales )
Well at this point I was ready to commit not just wholesale murder but also the cruelest possible torture

I know the ADSL is activated as I can connect using the guest account details - PPP comes up fine and I get given a valid public IP address.

SO
WHERE and how to get a username and password that will actually work and allow me to connect to Telkoms ADSL ?
( Without committing wholesale slaughter ? )

Going to the dentist ( even for the removal of impacted wisdom teeth ) is more fun that trying to deal with TELKOM !
( Maybe someone could make a song or a movie out of it ? )

I did exactly this for a client the other day. Called 10210, listened to 30 seconds of music, then got a consultant.

"Hello, I'd like to cancel the 20 Gb softcap product on this account please".

20 seconds of call centre background noise later.....

"Anything else for you today, Sir?"

"No thank you, that's all."

"Here's your reference number"

"Thank you"

"It's a pleasure, Have a nice day"

"You too. Bye"

YMMV.

Exception to prove the rule .....

Lucky you
My consultant did not know the difference between POP3 or IMAP
Kept on telling me all the emails will be deleted
She must have been working on -- "Monday-time" ?

YMMV -- all depends on the eagle hawk eye of the SA "big-brother" picanni

Desperation

... also ranger was never an official rep and couldn't help with this sort of problem either. Your best bet is a PM to TelkomZA.
Thanks
I was just throwing it -- out there
In DESPERATION ...

Different

"Here's your reference number"

"Thank you"

"It's a pleasure, Have a nice day"

"You too. Bye"

YMMV.
Welll

There is the experience of the direct shop consultant
As well as multiple call centre consultants
Are they ALL incompetent ?
MAYBE there is "something" different about the account I was trying to change ?

From your short -- YMMV -- it appears that they do not have to delete the whole of the existing account in order to remove the 20Gb softcap ?
HOW can your experience and mine be so totally different |?

Downgrading to a Mail box Only -- SOLUTION ?

Competent telkom person vs incompetent telkom person, hence YMMV.
SO
Went to the Telkom Direct shop this morning

THIS ( is apparently the way the cookie crumbles )

When you do away with your data ( soft-cap / uncapped ) and apply for a mail box ONLY

You do NOT get a Telkom ADSL account ! ie your ADSL line may be with Telkom but you have NO connection to Telkom as an ISP.

What does this mean ?
It means ( according to the Telkom consultant ) that in order to access your TELKOM email account ( mail box ) you MUST do this from ANOTHER ISP account ........ WTF
ie -- When you have mail with attachments you are using up your paid for data on the ALTERNATIVE ISP in order to read your mail at your TELKOM mail account ????????

This strange reasoning is what had me confused as it makes NO logical sense to me.
IF I have an account with WebAfrica I use WebAfrica to access my WEBAFRICA mail box
IF I have an account with Axxess I use Axxess to access my AXXESS mail box
Same for ALL other ISP accounts. ( this is my understanding and makes logical sense to me )

WHY is Telkom different ?
Surely it is easy enough to give a person a Telkom ADSL login and restrict the account to POP3 and IMAP protocols.
Perhaps someone can explain ??????

Hey SONA 2017 was quite interesting. Now just give them all paintball guns...

It means ( according to the Telkom consultant ) that in order to access your TELKOM email account ( mail box ) you MUST do this from ANOTHER ISP account
Nothing strange about this, after all does gmail offer free data to access your gmail account?

If you don't currently have a data account get a free 1GB account with another ISP - axxess, CW & AH all offer this (no, TI do not offer 1GB free).

We wanted to downgrade our Telkom ADSL package

Lose the 20GB softcap

When you do away with your data ( soft-cap / uncapped ) and apply for a mail box ONLY

You do NOT get a Telkom ADSL account !

Why is this so unusually hard to understand? You want to cancel the data, keep the line, keep the mailbox (though why anyone would want to let telkom handle their mail is beyond me).

You're going to need to buy data from another isp anyway.

Do yourself a favour and just get a gmail address, problem solved. The old excuse of "had it so long, too hard / lazy / much hassle to change" just doesn't wash with me I'm afraid.

All the same, dealing with some of Telkom's employees can be more painful than having teeth pulled. With pliers. I sympathize.

Different

Nothing strange about it, it's normal.
Cancel you mweb and just keep the email is exactly the same for example and you need another isp account to access that email.
OK
Well obviously I must be in the 5% that think differently.
I prefer the ISP that I have an account with to handle the [THEIR] email

I have two other ISP accounts and a domain from where I get MY email -- this was for SWAMBO
Who insisted on keeping her mail account.

Maybe Telkom will come out with a data special to meet / match and surpass the offerings of the other ISP's
IN which case things will go back to normal .........??????

Do you only use VW petrol in your VW car, or do you only buy BP cars to go with your BP petrol?

You need data(petrol) to make your email(car) work.

It doesn't matter where your petrol comes from, or what petrol car you have.

They are separate.

Confused

Your analogy is fitting seeing as your user-name is CHEVRON
However it is misleading

This is how it should read to fit the context correctly

This is like a Chevron petrol tanker going to a SHELL petrol station to fill up the Shell bowsers
( Granted most petrol in SA comes from a very few refineries )

ie Telkom client data flowing over another ISP's network

What is to stop the OTHER ISP from sniffing your mail to Telkom mail server ????
Seeing as most ISP's do NOT have secure ( encrypted ) mail facilities .......

The reason we lost the "soft-cap"
R99.00 vs R49.00 ( for double the data )

https://secure.telkom.co.za/today/shop/plan/softcap/

We are constantly told that Telkom cannot be more competitive because the 3rd party ISP's cry foul ....
Please tell us more faerie tales !!!!!!!!!!

You can use Telkom email with other ISP. Just need to use Telkom SMTP server to send mail, use current ISP POP3 server for incoming.

Sorted

You can use Telkom email with other ISP. Just need to use Telkom SMTP server to send mail, use current ISP POP3 server for incoming.
Yes thanks I have this all sorted out -- using Telkoms POP3 and SMTP

My above post was in connection with the high cost of Telkoms ADSL data ......... ( and the reason why we made the change to a mail box ONLY )

Perhaps you would like to reply to that ?
and
How many ISP's in SA use any form of authentication , security . privacy when it comes to email ??????

POP3 remains telkom.

Then on the SMTP one needs to make one of 2 choices.

If it is a PC/laptop that never moves away from that 1 network set the SMTP to the the ADSL data supplier's smtp details.

If it moves around alot set the SMTP details to telkom and then under advanced tell the outgoing mail to go via incoming email provider (exact word term varies from my words, but means the same)when sending.
