Good Day All,
My 2c is if you not in a position to acquire a real firearm (and there is no true replacement for a real gun for self-defense) a paintball marker / gun is a viable option to a certain extent. I will backup my claims with the following links:

Based on the three above video's it is viable to a certain extent. However this is based on you need a super badass paintball gun with all the extra's at max velocity possible the hardest balls money can buy....and lots of them.
Then should it come the time when its time to 'dance' with the intruder /s you going to have to make every shot count. Taking into consideration you are pretty much battering the intruder/s from a distance with the balls.
In a perfect scenario (which is it ever? its dark, you nervous etc etc) you fire 50+ odd balls at the intruder /s and you manage to either scare them off or actually put them down with excruciating pain...please let the rest of the members know of this successful event.
But in reality you have a 50-50 percent chance with even with a real gun. Difference is with a real gun, if you proficient etc you won't need 50+ odd rounds, and when the first bullet hits, his going down...(depending where you shoot him will determine if its permanently)
In closing no weapon will ever replace a real gun in my opinion, hence soldiers and police are carrying real guns

I never read where OP asked for best self defense mechanism. I'm pretty sure he knows a marker isn't the best option. Some of us only have under R1k to spend on self defence instead of the RRP of R7500 + for a old glock...and the trouble of getting the licence.

In my opinion, 'a good pistol marker with pepper balls' ain't going to cut it when you and your families lives are at risk

True, but he asked for markers. Not firearms.
Those pepper balls are quite intense. Shot in an enclosed area (inside the house) would cause quite a cough and burn.

Point i am making is help a fellow brother, by educating him that buying a paintball gun for self defense is not the best solution for self defense and to protect whatever he plans to. However to a certain extent it is viable.
As per the video links i posted, im with you, with a decent paintball gun, and the correct balls (pepper balls or solids) you can do serious damage. Hit the target 'on the mark' so to speak and the target will go down no doubt

I think it is best to make sure that no-one gets access to your property or family. Bullets very rarely stop and incapacitate a person. And IF you shoot or kill someone you are in the kuk anyway. I've seen a lot of footage recently where people are shot and run/walk away before collapsing eventually.
