Does anyone have any experience with painting a feature wall at home?

And, would anyone use one of those painters that wait outside Builders Warehouse? Are they good enough at it?

The wall I am thinking of painting is in my bedroom and it does have a small window in it. Bad idea?

One wall rather paint yourself. Not sure I can trust a stranger in my house.

For just a single wall, do it yourself over a weekend or two.

I did our bedroom 2 months ago

Wall 1 has the cuboards
Wall 2 has a bigass window
Wall 3 has narrow windows above bed
Wall4 has cuboards and enterance to bathroom

Painted wall 2 sides next to window and on top

Yes and one wall do yurself its quick and easy
Can do it before breakfast
Depending on surface and paint do 2 coats

You start going DIY and pretty soon you will be painting the whole house trust me - just outsource it.

Looking at the wall now, I see some cracks in the paint. Could this be damp?

Damp tends to make blisters, not cracks.

Its easy enough to paint a wall, but if you think it needs re-plastering etc, and you have no idea what you are doing, I suggest getting a professional.

You can pick up a random guy from outside Builders Warehouse, or you could get someone with contactable references. All depends on whether you want the painter to return later and take your TV away, or not.

Where do you live? I have an amazing painter/plasterer's details, I am in Cape Town.

He recently re-plastered and repainted my entire house from roof down - roof, ceilings, walls and exterior, plus much of my garden wall; incredible attention to detail and scrupulously honest.

Cool then it is not damp. Some googling suggests it could be caused by paint that was not properly applied (ie surface not prepared properly) or cheap paint.

Given that I live in a Summercon complex, either is easily possible.

I will probably get a professional in then. How much do you reckon it will cost for one bedroom? Its like 3m by 4m or so.

I'm in Sandton.

Thanks.

Genelock, what colour is your feature wall?

Repainted the other walls with a grey from the Dulux scandanavia range
think its called "daring". They have 4 shades

the feature wall was done with a yellow from Creative Talents called tumbleweed
Bought that at Spiros Mica in Durbanville though

For one wall in good condition easier to do it yourself. Get a good quality paint and use those sponge rollers rather than a paintbrush. At least two coats. Wash wall with sugar soap solution first.

So I had a paint company come over to quote because of the cracks in the wall that I saw. He explained to me that what was happening was that the window frames were not properly sealed against the plaster of the wall. Water was getting in and that was causing the paint to crack. It is visible in a few places below windows that are exposed to rain.

He said to me, based on what he had seen, he thought it would cost around R1500 to R1700 to repaint the room. So I'm like, fine.

Then I get a quote via email - R3800. To repaint my bedroom. Um no. That is ridiculous!

It includes one coat of primer and two coats of paint. I'm not even sure whether I need primer, although I can see that the plaster is exposed after the cracked paint is removed.

I think what I'm going to do, is do as much of this as I can. I'm going to read about what I need to repaint my walls. I presume that means I will have to take sandpaper to them, and then wash them with sugar soap after that. Including giving extra attention to remove that old cracked paint. When that is done, I think I might get one of those guys who wait by Builders Warehouse to do the actual application of the primer and the paint. I'll buy the primer and paint of course.

Thoughts?

Why not wall paper it? I wanted a feature wall in my bedroom so I bought this wallpaper from aliexpress and did it myself.

It wasn't perfect, because I didn't buy enough so I had to patch at the bottom, but it still looked really good and my tenants loved it. It's significantly less expensive.
