Pairing iPhone 4 with MBP (2011)

I am having problems pairing the iPhone 4 with the MBP on bluetooth. it seems as if the MBP is seeing the iPhone but I get an "Connection Unsuccessful" message on the phone. It states that my MBP is not supported.

How do I fix this?

Try wifi hotspot. Always works perfectly for me.

Thats not the issue. Hotspot works well, but why the BT problem?
