Pakistan on Thursday test fired an intermediate-range missile able to carry nuclear and conventional warheads, the military said.

The Shaheen II, also known as Hatf VI, has a range of 1,500 kilometres and is capable of in-flight manoeuvres, the statement said.

Pakistan and India conducted nuclear tests days apart in 1998 following decades of secret development on either side.

The South Asian rivals have since been working on missile systems to fire their respective nuclear payloads at each other.

Pakistan has invested huge sums in the program despite an almost bankrupt economy and more than half of its 180-million population living below a global poverty benchmark.
