Depends what you enjoy doing.
Tanking isnt for everyone. It's a thankless and quite expensive (imo at least) role to fill, if you plan on being really good at it.

Progression tanked since tbc, now I am back on my original main as I had enough of bloody idiot dps. I can now choose again who i am going to heal or not

Tanking is most defintely thankless

Thankless, yes. But also lucrative. Get a prot spec and some starter prot gear (buy the tempered titansteel helm and boots, the blue saronite tanking set and gem it all up with cheap green/blue stam gems and enchants and you should be all set) and you can farm up gobs of triumph emblems to buy all your tier9 etc etc badge gear, in days. The tank shortage is only getting worse as existing tanks get geared and stop running heroics to focus on raiding. Add to that the fact that paladins are the easiest class to tank with and you'll be blitzing through hc's siphoning up badges and even loots for your ret or holy sets pretty quickly. Heals and dps are so overgeared these days, your long term survivability isn't even that important, as long as you're def capped and can hold some aggro.
It's basically what I did, got a tank spec, slapped together some gear and about a week or two later my DPS set sorted so I could start raiding as DPS. Now I only run the single random daily each day for the 2 frost badges. Plus it's good to be able to tank in a pinch if the guild is running short. If I'd tried to grind all those badges as DPS it would have taken at least 2 or 3 times longer to farm it all. I'd probably still be busy .
