Palm Pre ... latest

Yea I posted about the Palm Pre a while ago already - not a single reply ;) Seems people aren't really interested in Palm - but this is said to be an iPhone killer!

However, I found this article about 12 brands that won't be here soon http://247wallst.com/2009/04/15/twelve-major-brands-that-will-disappear/#more-30817

One is Palm, and apaprantly the success of the company if based on this phone

10. Palm (PALM) has been at death’s door for some time. It prospects have improved recently and the company has one last chance to become viable when it launches its new “Pre” product. Recent research shows that almost no one who owns an Apple (AAPL) iPhone or RIM (RIMM) Blackberry will switch to the new smartphone, so Palm will have to essentially expand the market to get share for its new device during a recession. The “Pre” will also be sold exclusively though Sprint (S), the No.3 cellular carrier in the US which has been losing subscribers consistently for more than two years. The launch of the “Pre” is a disaster in the making. Palm’s results for the quarter that ended on February 27th were awful, failing to meet Wall St’s modest expectations. Palm sold only 482,000 handsets for the period, down 42% from the same quarter the year before. Revenue dropped from $312 million to $91 million, and Palm lost $95 million. Palm brought in just over $100 million with the help of its largest shareholder, Elevation Partners, in a recent financing. The bottom line is that Palm has no chance of getting an even modest part of the smartphone market in a severe economic downturn since it competes with two of the premier technology companies in the world—Apple and RIM. Palm won’t be in business in a year.

Will be a sad day if Palm goes under. They've got a winnner in the Pre, but it may be too late it seems. I see Chrysler has filed for bankruptcy today.

I still have a PALM III Color, under my desk somewhere :) battery life is not too good, but my son loves doodle'ing on it :) and every now and then I pull it out to change the neighbours TV channels :D

I see on BoyGeniusReport that another new Palm called "Eos" may be in the works for GSM markets. It seems the news that Palm will go under in the next year hasn't reached Palm yet. I believe that WebOS will do great - if Palm can get through the desert in the next 18 months. I expect Palm to be bought out by one of the big players within the next 12 months.

Unfortunately when a company is "down" then people buy even less of their product because they know support might dissappear. I suppose it's not too bad for phones/pda's that get replaced every 2 years or so but in general if Apple and Palm made the same product you would buy the Apple one if Palm were struggling as a company. So the Pre/Eos/etc need to be a lot better than the other offerings in order to sell.

True rorz0r. Considering that one either pays many thousands of Rands cash or get tied down to a 24 month contract to own a phone it's a huge risk to opt for a product from a company under so much pressure. Backup/support may evaporate very quickly and then a large investment goes down the loo. Pity, but true.

Dammmm - must've missed that one!

Like 2008/2009 was the year(s) of the iPhone clones, 2009/2010 is going to be the years of the Pre clones! Palm didn't invent the portrait style slider (think PDA2K!) - but they did bring it into the public's eye and now it's accepted. The same way as iPhone bought touch screen phones to the mainstream... Moto and Samsung already has similar phones on the drawing board - I just dig it for it's one handed usefulness - can walk and sms with one hand - try doing that on a X1! And the Pre's got a big touchscreen AND physical keyboard!

People have been predicting Palm's demise for the last 4/5 years or so & its still around... And as seen with the Palm Eos (Centro2?) they're not resting - getting ready to crank out new (good) product!
