I just came back from Germany with a Panasonic P42GT20E series 3D TV. I bought it new for about R5800 (after I claimed the 20% VAT back) and payed around R1k import duties at customs.

I have just ordered me the 3D glasses now and they sell for about 80 euros in Germany. Has anyone had experience with the Panasonic 3D TVs? My main motivation is racing GT5 in 3D. Got the wheel too.

You'll be hard pressed to find anyone with 3D TVs in South Africa. Good luck.

How come? Panasonic maybe but LG, etc, my friend have a LG 47" with passive glasses. It's a great unit with acceptable 3D performance, even has 2D to 3D scaling that works like magic.

Because 3D is a gimmick and it costs too much for the average Joe. There is no market in SA for this type of technology yet.

Friend in Newlands has one. Plus 5 blu-ray discs and an Oppo blu-ray player. Images look like layers of paper one behind the other, not really natural I thought. Glasses didn't cost € 80 though, I think they were much cheaper

Your personal opinion. We will soon here about a multitude of 3D TV owners after Christmas. FHD was also a gimmick so was many other technology advancements. We already saw posts of members in awe with 3D gaming and BD content. 3D will become a standard feature of most new TV's in future. The technology are here and affordable. BTW my friend owning the 47" LG is an average Joe and he is happy for spending the 11K.

Time will tell.

I'm also not sold on 3D but a 51" 3D Plasma can be picked up for R8K. Smaller models for even less. I'm sure there's a huge market with many already sold.

Try chip in R1k for the R9k - R9.9k 51" FHD 3D plasma.

51" HD Ready 3D plasma is missing the Full HD marketing sticker - most people would ignorantly give this a miss, putting too much reliance on resolution over more important factors like contrast. If they sit close to their TVs, sure they can benefit from FHD. Most people sit at least 3m away from <50" TVs, outside the range of getting the full FHD experience.

Well, it is clear that 3D TV is in its infancy, but growing rapidly. The technology is not state of the art (with the idea of shutter glasses) and easy to impliment with software and power systems. Secondly, the 'got-to-have-latest-and-greatest' people have already spent the R40-50k on the introductory 3D TVs two years ago. Now the prices have nose-dived and a 51'' for less than R8k is on the market.

The biggest reason why 3D TV is not running rampant (s.i.c.) is because of the glasses. People inherently don't like to have add-ons when watching TV.

I think it that in a very short period of time people will do the 32'' > 42'' > 50'' TV upgrade and by that time the 50'' will have 3D capabilities. At the moment they are selling the TVs with a price-premium for being 3D, same as 100Hz...its software and not hardware...in two-three years time....there will be no extra charge for these features...

There is a bigger problem than all of this... 3D content is not readily available. I wonder how much it will cost?

True but it is steadily growing. If you look around there is a surprising amount of content available ...

Bluray 3D - not that much. but the 3D shelf at the Look & Listen down the road from me steadily increases as the months go by

YouTube - quite a bit of 3D content, if you have a Samsung SmartTV its YouTube player is 3D aware and switches to 3D mode whenever you view a 3D tagged clip

Explore 3D - Another Samsung SmartTV streaming app to showcase 3D material, trailers, music videos, demos, documentaries etc. (need to switch to another region to get access)

File downloads - Sites like http://www.biohemmet.se host trailers, demos etc. or if so inclined you can hit torrents/news where you'll will find a some SBS 3D rips

Games - quite a few PS3 titles have 3D capability, not sure how prevalent on PC/XBOX?

So yeah 3D is still in its infancy, but there is enough out there to sample/experience the technology and put your 3D TV to work.
