Panelbeater Imposing a Max Card Transaction amount??

You have the wrong insurer, or don't understand how the game works.

Every insurer I have ever quoted with has explained to me that a higher excess means lower premiums and a lower excess means higher premiums.

It is a matter of risk - the lower the premium, the more the risk to the insurer, and the higher your premium needs to be.

Get a quote from your insurer - excess makes a massive difference to your premium. Could quite possibly be R200 per month. In one year he will have saved the difference in excess.

Yeah, and then life happens and he has to claim three, four times in quick succession and can't get his car repaired or goods replaced cause the first two excesses wiped him out. It's a stupid short term game if you ask me, which no one did, so I guess I'll throw an internet standard IMO for you.

I have had excellent service reporting merchants directly to Mastercard for this kind of thing.

Tell them they don't tell you upfront, so not paying the full amount by card is not an option - and you'll have to take it up with your insurance if they don't agree...

... and also mention the above.

R4700 is not a ridiculous excess. I've had quotes where the excess was 5%, yes a percentage! Given my vehicle is valued at R300 000, that's a R15 000 excess :wtf: That is just plain robbery.

My current insurer has a R4200 excess but my premiums are super low - roughly 50% of what other insurers were offering.

It’s always a percentage in the case of theft or a write off.

It’s R2500 (R4700) OR 5% (sometimes even 10% conditionally).

How do you think insurers would survive if they replaced entire cars with R4700?

You missed my point.

I specifically chose not to have the excess (I pay a small waiver, so in reality just pay it every month and works out to about 3 years) without any change in premium.

The premium is still less than any competitors even with their high excesses.

Which is exactly why I have no qualms claiming instead of trying to cover it out of my pocket.

Literally the point of insurance is not to deal with surprises. R4700 or even R2500 is a pretty big surprise.

This does not compute. You have chosen no excess, but it did not equate to an increase in premiums? That is nonsense as far as I know. And once you claim more than once, terms will change...

So my car is in for panel beating, the insurance excess is R4300, and the SMS they sent me now states "If paying by card we only allow an amount of not more than R3500 per transaction."

I'm pretty broke at the moment, and was planning on paying for it with credit card on budget. What could possibly be the reason for this and is this even allowed???

Although, are we not confusing things? It's not the insurance, it's the limits on the OP's credit card...

I also have an excess waiver and have yet to find an insurer that can offer the same premium with an excess. I've just gone through the process again of trying to get quotes.

Same here. Excess waiver is under R100, totally worth it. No time for paying R4-5l for excess. TSEK

I've also got excess waiver, I to unfortunately had to claim a year ago and recently, so those would've been R2500+- for both claims whereas now all I've paid is the R60 or R70 for excess waiver over the course of three years.

Technically there is still an excess but you pay a small monthly waiver not to have it.

My premium is still better than any competitive quite and they all have a conventional excess in place and often a much higher one.

So my total premium is less and I have no surprises as opposed to using someone else.

Yeh, I think I worked out it would take something like 10 years of no claiming to make up the excess.

Thank you!

Now I don’t need to go through the inevitable inquisition with Splinter calling me a liar.

Report them to the banking umbudsman - what they are doing is illegal!

I'd just report them surreptitiously, so you don't get attacked personally needlessly and then just tell them you can only pay on CC using budget for the full amount and if they won't accept that then you will take it up with the Insurance.
Doing this kind of thing is BS, they are running a legitimate business for f0k sakes, the owner is probably Greek and grew up in his dads cafe :crylaugh:
